    Is it necessary?

For me the gun safe isn't exactly burglar proof. What's to stop a thief from bashing the thing open? I have my HD gun in a small gunvault next my bed with two extra mags. I keep the rest of my other firearms in the big safe bolt down to the ground.

Is it necessary to take out the fire pin or the barrel and hide it some where else? So if the thief decides to carry the whole safe away to another location, all the firearms in there are useless/non-functional.

    Pretty funny.

If you step back and assess the situation, you got shafted either way - your weapons are still gone, no matter what.

The question is if you want to shaft the burgler.

But I can also see the advantage of your reasoning, as there will be non-functioning stolen weapons out there. (Until a knowledgabe burgler figures-out what is wrong with the weapons).

    Hmmm...good food for thought.

PS: It would be messed-up if you were in a rush (like I usually am), grab your weapon for a day of shooting...and realize you forgot the bolt at home.

Do the bolts, not just the firing pins.

It will be much easier for you to track down those people if they have to called every manufacturer to order complete bolts. AR bolts are easy to get, but try finding an AR-30 or AR-50.

I only have a few guns so it's not going to be a problem. It will be a problem if you have 10+ guns. I just took all the firing pin out and put in ziplock bags and label it.

What if would-be thief gets frizzed out 'cause the gun safe's bolted down, and just steals all the firing pins?

How many times have you been in a car accident?

But you still wear your seatbelt.

How many times have you been in a life-and-death situation?

                      But you still carry concealed.

Shoot...for that matter, how many times have your weapons been ripped-off?

But you still buy a safe, huh?

My sister's place has gotten broken into just last week. They've just moved in no more than 2weeks. They've just pack out this past weekend. My sister had just gotten home and parked car in the garage unit a distance away from the house and her two children of 1yr&3yr was with her. She had gotten into the house and the burglars was still in it ran sacking the house. When they seen that she was in the house the burglars split out. All the burglars were asian (cambodian) teenage gangsters. She didn't get a good look at the faces as everything happened so fast. The neighborhood that they've just moved in all consisted of cambodians&blacks and more than likely the burglars were neighbors. They took an xbox, a ruger .40cal handgun&ammo, home electronics. The handgun was not stored in a bolt down safe but just a small portable safe. I doubt that a bolted down safe in this situation will stop them from stealing it but only slow them down. As being neigborhood theives it's easy to run home and get the necessary tools come back and pack out the whole safe home. Which neighbor's going to call the cops when they're all in it together. The theives have all the time in the world-no worries. That was what it looks like when my sis came home- door was open and crooks just took they're time.

I would say that if your safe is bolted down properly, keeping them in the safe would suffice. There is no need to make it a pain in the butt for yourself everytime you want to go shooting to assemble and put together your firing pins, cylinders, or whatever parts you want to disassemble just for the sake of it. Take all your serial numbers of your weapons, and keep them in a safe secure off-site location like a parent or relatives home and lock them properly. Even a cheap safe bolted down will be awful difficult to get into all that quickly by the quick smash and grab thief. Anything worth anything is kept in the safe at my place.
