Any safe is better than no safe, but some safes suck more than others.
What safe maker/model is it? Most "safes" are "Residential Security Containers". Some are structurally unsound; some have locking systems which are prone to failure. -

I would do the same if I were you, as secure as you think your house or wherever you keep your firearms is you can never be too cautious because the world is crazy right now. For 500 dollars you can get an ok safe, mainly the Winchester safes from Tractor Supply Co. online. If you want a slightly better safe I would recommend a Liberty or if you are willing to go top of the line maybe a Fort Knox?sigpicComment

At $500 you are not getting a safe. You are getting a Residential Storage Container (RSC). Do you know the difference?
And you are also miles away...in dollars...from the "best" safe you can find. REAL safes are REAL expensive. REAL EXPENSIVE.
And I'm not knocking a $500 safe. They have their place. Just make sure you understand how much security you are getting for $500...and how much you are not. Because it would be a bummer if you thought you were getting more security than what you are actually getting, and you then decided to skip the gun insurance, thinking that you were better protected."Kestryll I wanna lick your doughnut."

If you want a superb safe (though likely not DOJ recognized) keep your eyes open for a bank location that is closing. The landlord, stuck with the thing, might even pay you to remove it. Some banks have gone crazy with the number of locations they have. Kind of like service stations used to be ... one at every corner. The future could hold some deals.Comment
