Looking for a handgun safe for a nightstand

My kid is starting to learn to walk... so safety is top-of-mind now!

I've always had a large gun safe for rifles, but never have had to worry about a kid grabbing a gun in the house. I've been browsing and shopping around for an ideal handgun safe for a nightstand, and I keep finding products with so/so reviews (biometric scans aren't great... can easily be dropped on the floor and opened).

Wondering if CG has any suggestions on a good product here in terms of safety and value. My main goal is to keep my handgun accessible within 5 seconds of threat detection, and my kid locked out from the gun (as in, he has to try harder then taking a screwdriver to the thing and dropping it on the ground).

VLine makes top of the line equipment and they use mechanical locks, none of that biometric crap that is slways just one battery away from failure.

All V-Line Cases and Cabinets will be shipping with a two year supply of Cortec corrosion inhibitor! This is the baby brother of our popular Top Draw handgun safe. It features the SIMPLEX five push button mechanical easily programmable lock that requires no batteries. The Compact pistol safe is ideal…

I have one of these and I like it a lot. Never had an issue with it and it unlocks extremely quick. Nice to have a key backup too incase the reader fails. https://varasafety.com/collections/f...roducts/reach2

I use the Vaultek VE10. It’s very high quality and solid for entry level. Fit my bill for basic night stand safe.

It has a rechargeable battery which I check periodically and after 2 years is now at 60% I believe. And I open and close the safe several times a week.

Comes with a cable and screws for mounting more permanent. I run the cable though an can easily move it if needed or take traveling.

Saw one at a gun show made to go from the house to the car and almost instantly locks to a small bracket you mount in each. I remember there was a separate compartment inside you could keep a loaded mag and at the time it was legal in CA. Sorry don't remember the name.

My advice is to go with a mechanical simplex lock over biometric or anything electronic. Batteries die and electronics fail...often at the worst possible time. I also don't feel that the reliability is there yet for biometrics at the price point of most handgun safes. V-line usually makes a good product. Fort Knox and American Security also make boxes.

              Random ideas:
              -large revolver
              -shot gun
-one of those shelves with hidden compartment.

Difficult solution-let us know what you decide. I am faced with same dilemma.

If you want something reliable, simple, durable, and secure, then look at the ones that use the Simplex lock. They are also quick and easy to use just by feel, not to mention most are built with thicker steel. Be sure and bolt any of them down. You will spend a little more initially, but you will be able to hand it down to your kid later.
