Basic Gun Cases and Gun Locks

New gun owner here. Question about transporting guns to the range or anywhere for the matter.

First, background. I have the plastic cases for the guns which have the hole for the gun lock cable that comes with each gun. If I understand correctly, using the gun cable lock through the action is not enough to properly secure the gun while transporting but rather the gun needs to be in a case and the cable lock (or any lock) needs to secure the case from the outside.

Does it matter what the case is made from? The law does not specify a material the case needs to be made from but I assume having the guns in a paper grocery bag wrapped with a cable lock is asking for trouble. I see some fabric gun cases that appear to be secured only by the holes on the zipper heads for a padlock. Is that the way to go if I want cheap bare minimum compliance with the law for the purpose of transportation?

Does the lock need to be special, government approved? Can it be any padlock or cable lock? For argument sake, would a zip tie count as a lock? Or maybe a more ridiculous example, one of those wire ties for a loaf of bread... maybe pass the bread, stuff the guns and tie the bag?

Probably you want material so one cannot manipulate the trigger from outside the case; the zipper-pull-lock thing should be fine, and the lock need not be much, but the rule is key or combination --

As used in this part, “locked container” means a secure container that is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, keylock, combination lock, or similar locking device. The term “locked container” does not include the utility or glove compartment of a motor vehicle.

I prefer soft cases, and bought these locks.

But noticed that the soft cases with 2 zippers don't always accommodate for even a small cable, or that some cases (like Ruger's) only have one zipper.

So I bought this grommet kit and placed a grommet as close to the edge seam as I can get with the zipper closed. It looks very polished, and I can thread the cable of the lock right through the grommet and through one or both of the zippers.

I put guns in individual soft cases, put those in bigger size ammo can with $5 lock kit stud off Amazon. Tip buy multi pack self setting combination locks and set them all the same to your favorite Cal. You won't forget combination & you don't have to mess with keys.

Cable locks meaningless. Cannot open case enough to put fingers in. Any case will work as long as it can be locked. Thru tabs on zippers fine. Law just says container. Try looking it up on google.
