Wincent sent me their π1 Biometric Portable Gun Safe Lock Box to test and evaluate. I was hesitant after reading some negative Amazon reviews. Some early models of this safe had issues with the biometrics lock, which would unlock using any body part. But this new lockbox worked correctly every time.

Those who are dubious of biometrics reliability, it does have a standard key lock. And my thumb is far more reliable than my ability to remember a number-password if woken up from a deep sleep.

The box had enough internal space to fit my Glock 17 with an attached Streamlight TRL-1. It would not accomodate my O-Light Valkyrie or Surefire X300. But there was ample enough room for 2-3 spare magazines and a backup EDC light, in addition to my pistol.

how ling have you tested it? my problem with the Biometric ones is they over time get worse at opening and am constantly having to update my fingerprint.

A key to backup biometrics does little good if the biometrics doesn't work. By the time you get that key, it's all over. The big problem is that you never know if it's going to work until you try to use it and if it doesn't work it's too late.

None of the biometrics are fast. Batteries need replacing or charging. No thanks.

Simplex or straight key locks.

If you can't remember the unlock sequence for a Simplex lock then how will you remember which finger to use for the biometric? None of the biometrics are even close to the fingerprint readers in phones.

This is about access to a gun. It has to work every time without even wondering. Not all the time during some test, every time. A simplex lock can sit there for years and it will work the same as when you left it there. You leave a battery operated biometric lock even a short time, how do you know the battery didn't go dead? Even if the lock works, the battery could not and who hasn't had batteries go dead without warning?

Think about it another way, why not just operate it like a key lockbox? Plan on using a key as your primary. But if you can't find the key you have the biometric backup.

Yikes.

Sounds like they invested all their money and research into the biometric lock, and only had about 20 cents left to spend on the keylock.

This lockbox is probably fine for keeping your EDC pistol in next to your bed when you're sleeping, but I wouldn't leave a gun in it unattended, especially if kids are there. As someone mentioned in the comments on that video, it looks like it could be opened in about 5-10 seconds with no skill whatsoever and a simple paperclip.
