safe lock issue brewing

In brief:
Custom Hall's safe new in 2001, original lock mechanism, I don't recall whether it's a LeGard or S&G lock. I changed combo maybe 6 or 8 years ago (when the numbers had started to migrate/get sloppy). I dial it slow...know now not to "spin it". Just in the last several days when I go to lock it up, the dial has developed a hard stop/catch when trying to scramble it. Over the years, I have opened and re-locked it maybe an average of once per day.

What is going on, and is it fixable? Am I in danger of not being able to lock it up?

I do have a new Big Red Group 2 ready to put in...but I wasn't planning on having to do it this weekend!

I have a cannon safe (900 lbs) from about 1999-ish. A few years ago, it got to the point where it would take 3-4 tries to open it, even slowly dialing the correct numbers. I called the original shop, which had relocated out of state. I called/emailed a local gun shop that sold similar safes and was given the name & number of a local locksmith. He came out, disassembled the lock, did some stuff to it, then put it all back together using different numbers I gave him. Works like a charm ever since. It cost maybe $200. Hope this helps.

The biggest issue is being locked out of the safe to me, not the the safe not locking. Being locked out of the safe almost guarantees that you will need the services of a locksmith. I would immediately open it up and see if you can see anything mechanically wrong with the lock itself. But by that time, you might as well as install the new lock.

My S&G also started acting up a year ago. I called Hayward Safes from whom I bought the safe to come out and look at it. Even after speaking to them and them promising to call me back the next day, they never did. So much for customer service even though this was the second safe I bought from them.

So I just opened the safe up and realized that one of the cylinders had walked a little bit. So I just buttoned it back up and used a slightly different combo that still works to this day.
