    Muzzle brake dia.

Is there any significant difference from a 6.5 dia. hole to a 30cal. hole on the Area 419 muzzle brakes? As far as using a 30cal. hole on a 6.5 Creedmoor? I know that it will work but not sure if there would be much if any performance difference? Any thoughts or sites that have done this testing? Thanks

Here is the product information for Area 419 Hellfire brakes:

For muzzle brakes that need to be bored out by a gunsmith the typically recommended bullet clearance (muzzle brake hole diameter - bullet nominal diameter) is minimum 0.020" and maximum 0.050".

If we assume that the Hellfire 7mm/308 caliber brake has the minimum 0.020" clearance for .308 caliber bullets, then the hole diameter is .328". That is .064" over the 6.5mm bullet diameter, and slightly over the maximum recommended for a custom-bored brake.

That said, I have a few Area 419 Hellfire brakes: two 6.5mm 3-port brakes and one 6.5mm/30cal 2P 2-port brake.

I use the 3-port brakes on both 6mm and 6.5mm rifles. I use the 2-port brake on both 6.5mm and 308WIN rifles. All work great.

When I switch between the 3-port 6.5mm brake and 2-port 6.5mm/30cal brake on my 6.5 Creedmoor AR with 20" barrel, both brakes work very well, there is slightly more felt recoil when using the 2-port 6.5mm/30cal brake, but I can not be certain whether the difference stems from the hole diameter or the number of ports.

There is a huge increase in felt recoil and muzzle jump when shooting this rifle unbraked vs either brake.

I chose the 2-port brake in 6.5mm/30cal because I also use it on a 308WIN AR with 20" barrel. The 2-port version is supposed to be optimized for shorter barrels and semiautos, to balance recoil reduction with acceptable side blast. And yeah the 6.5 Creedmoor AR with 3-port Hellfire brake is LOUD. It's not just a sound that is heard with the ears, but a thump felt through the chest, felt even by the shooter.

Well I ordered the Area 419 30cal break from Brownells for $148.50 free shipping. Can't wait to try it, I'm sure after all of the advice given and read it will work fine on my 6.5 Creedmoor. And I just may order another one when they come back in stock. If I can get it for the same price. Thanks for the heip

Don't mean to thread jack, but can anyone confirm that 308 muzzle devices work for 762x39 (.311) ?

The reminder for everyone- drop that rod down your note to verify the threads were cut in alignment with the bore

If the bore is not in the center of the barrel, does the bullet clear the brake?

Hopefully my Area 419 break comes in tomorrow. If not It should be here on Monday and then I'll post a pic then, or as soon as possible.

I'm not sure but if it's a name brand 30cal break and not a custom break that was previously bored out for a .308cal I think that it would work. What I've been told is that the hole dia. of the break needs to be at least .020" larger than your bullet dia. But I would confirm with some others to be on the safe side. Do you know what size hole is in the break now that your wanting to use?

No, don't have one picked out. Just curious if 308 muzzle devices work on x39 uppers or bolt actions.

In general yes they will work, especially if the brake is of decent quality so the bore and threads are concentric.

The Russian 7.62mm bullet diameter is .311" vs NATO 7.62mm is .308". That .003" difference in diameter is not going to make a difference if the muzzle device hole is .328" or larger and concentric to within +/- 0.005"

I put a 308 brake on a x39-barreled AR upper & it worked fine. Didn't get any baffle strikes.
