Best Storage/transportation Solution

So I know a high quality safe is probably the best solution but for various reasons, isn't going to work for me. I have a dp 12, steyr aug and a couple of other rifles and a few pistols.

I am looking at doing custom hard cases from Patriot or Peak. Both advertise closed cell foam and I've heard that's ok for storage.

Is that true? Would it be good to store these firearms in this type of case? In my case, it would be great to be able to lock them and keep it at home, then take it with me to the range. Does anyone have experience with this? Any advise would be appreciated. Thx

Thieves appreciate you packing them in to-go containers. Cases are for transporting, not storage.

The least expensive "Safe" is more secure than the best of the hard cases. Get one and lag screw it to the studs in the bedroom closet. then hang a long coat in front of it. Buy carry cases to transport.

Be aware of moisture problems associated with gun case storage. Oil well and check for rust.

Rapid change in temperature is the enemy.

A good way to rust a gun is to place a cold gun in a warm case. The moisture in the case will condense on the gun.

Same thing can happen by simply allowing the gun case sun exposure. The case and foam will warm faster than the rifle, allowing the moisture to condense on the cold rifle.

Of course this will depend on the moisture content of the foam.

During winter, I’ve placed a cold rifle in a case to go the range, then let the case sit in the sun. The rifle was wet, really wet upon removal.

I see this all of the time when road tripping. Normally I pack up in the morning when it is cold, then arrive in the late afternoon at the destination. Guaranteed, if I place the soft case on the roof of the truck, without opening it, the shotgun will be covered in moisture in less than 5 minutes.

I would never store in foam...even closed cell. Particularly when it's so easy to just take the foam out and set it on top of the case. If I couldn't afford a safe or didn't have room for it due to living in an apartment, I would go with a simple steel storage cabinet and do the best I could to secure it. But I'd spend $50-$60 for a golden rod, big container of desiccant, and a humidity meter. All can be had off of Amazon.

In absence of the cabinet I might go for a simple foot locker or similar. If I had to use the cases I'd buy a BoreStore for each gun and use that after removing the foam...and I'd still toss in a container of desiccant.
