1924 Spanish Civil War Mosin Nagant Dragoon

Some folks were asking for photos of the Spanish Civil War unconverted Dragoon I scored recently.

It's a beautiful rifle; finely made hex receiver, sanded stock, wire sling hangers, made in USSR stamp, blade front sight and original style rear sight. I think it might be somewhat rare, maybe a rifle supplied by Mexico?

    My modest collection:

Thats a nice rifle. It's alot easier to find a 91/30 out of Spain so you made a good find. Mexico supplied Remington and New England Westinghouse mosins after buying them from the U.S. This one most likely was shipped from Russia in the early part of 1937 according to Arms For Spain. The Soviets sent many 1891 rifles along with the other old and obsolete rifles before sending Spain the more modern 91/30.

Nice dragoon, I've only ever seen one out in the wild. The one that I saw was a 29 Izhevsk, no SCW or Finnish history to it, but it had be re-blued and the stock had had the hell sanded out of it.

Lots of history in your rifle OP.

Well, the sanding was typically done in Spain. I'm guessing a bunch of rifles arrived with crappy peeling shellac like they do at Big 5! It's actually a signifier of authenticity so I'm not sad...

Cost me more than a couple of M44's. I probably paid too much for it (or rather I paid early but given it's an SCW unconverted Dragoon it was very hard for me to walk away!

That would make sense, thanks for the info. I have a copy of "Comrades and Commissars" waiting to be read, "Arms for Spain" will be next on my SCW list.

I was just randomly scrolling through Mosin Nagants on Gunbroker (that's how it starts right?). There was a typo in the listing title so it didn't show up in my "Spanish Civil War" search agent listing. I feel rather fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time for this one.

This is a great site for anyone interested in SCW Mosin Nagants.

Also, if you're interested or curious about this almost forgotten prologue to WW2, I strongly recommend Homage to Catalonia, George Orwell's biographical account of his time fighting for the Spanish Republic.

Arms for Spain was ok, a bit dry. I think the best part is the list of Soviet shipments to the republic in the back of the book. Grab it on Amazon, it's pretty cheap. I need to read Comrades and Commissars as well as Five Down, No Glory.

Another one added to reading list!

Now I have to ask, what is your profile image of?

"Industrias de Guerra de Catalunya - 1938..."

              Sounds intriguing...

It's a rifle I picked up a few years ago, a Spanish m1916 mauser. I haven't shot it yet, I have to pick up some 7mm.
