100 years ago this rifle was in the trenches of France fighting the Germans in World War I.
In 1910 the British War Office started to develop a replacement for their well known Enfield No.1 Mk.III. The prototypes were being manufactured in the US based on the Enfield designs. When WW I broke out the British instructed all out production begin on the most recent prototype they had developed by 1914(the Pattern 14 or P-14).These are sometimes known as the Enfield No.3 Mk.1. Rifles were produced by Winchester, and Remington(at both their Ilion,NY and Eddystone,PA factories) for use on the Western Front. When the U.S. entered World War I we continued production chambered in 30-06 rather than British 303. For our troops these rifles were known as the U.S. Model of 1917. Many parts are common to both models.
After Hitler invaded Poland in 1939 the P-14s were removed from storage in England and returned to service as specified in the Weedon Repair Standard. This required careful inspection and checking tolerances along with the removal of the volley sights.
This rifle has undergone the WRS conditioning for World War II and is in good conditon. I have had the headspace checked twice by gunsmiths. The serial numbers match on the receiver and barrel. The bolts were not serial numbered. I have a new unissued top handguard I am including with the sale.
The current Blue Book value of these rifles range from $600 for a 60% specimen to $1350 for a 100%. This rifle is better than 60%, but I'm not a professional appraiser and don't know what the exact % grade would be. I do not want to misrepresent the condition so I am asking only $399 to be on the safe side.
Thanks for looking.
