Anyone Recognize This Old Buttplate / Recoil Pad?

Trying to identify an old buttplate I found in my closet. I'm guessing its an old shotgun buttplate. Its 5 inches long with what appears to be a pointer in the center with a fox below the dog and maybe a mountain lion poking his head out above the dog. There are Japanese or Chinese characters near the bottom.
Here are photos, bottom ones show the characters.










Any ideas?

It is Japanese. I have no I idea what type of firearm it is for. I cannot what one of the characters is as it is hard to see.

It is Kanji which is the Chinese characters for the Japanese language.

From right to left, the two character means Tokyo. The other 2 characters, one means river, but I cannot see the last character. Bummer

Thanks for showing a larger picture OP. It is still hard to read the characters, but now I see 3 vertical characters. If I read it correctly, it is some Japanese name.

Edit. Oh wow at the bottom picture, it wasn't as clear so I read the name wrong. The new 3rd picture, I see the characters now I believe, it is still a persons name.

my friend agrees with your translation. Tokyo Kawa (Tokyo River). she too cannot make out the last middle character. she says it looks like a name.

this buttplate looks like it came off of an old hunting rifle, the buttplate could be custom. too much detail to be military surplus.

Yea unless there is an expert that knows everything , this might just be a custom buttplate.

Thanks for the replies. I've tried various ways to get a close up of the Japanese characters that is easier to read, but I can't do any better than the above photos. Any other insights, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Try to take a rubbing of the characters, then scan that.

I've tried a rubbing and also making a modeling clay imprint. The lines in the large character are too close together. Nothing comes out clearly. The above photos are the best I can do.

It reads Tokyo Kawa ya. The bottom character means store or ya. It's a store called Kawa ya and it was located in Tokyo. It's an old way of writing Tokyo. The
