I have a little Yugo surplus left that is brass cased, non-magnetic but a little corrosive and needs the hot water bath after shooting and before regular cleaning. What have you found to be reasonably accurate, non-magnetic, non-corrosive and balance price with all those factors?? I read that "Red Army" was not so great. What off the shelf ammo 7.62x54R do you like? Thanks very much.

I've actually shot quite a bit of the Red Army stuff without issue. Would I say its great ammo? Niet. But it shoots.
And for the record, I've shot both the non-magnetic as well as the standard magnetic Red Army in both x39 and x54r without issue.Last edited by Crusader; 01-27-2015, 4:01 PM. -
Thanks Crusader. I read that it was marked non-corrosive but in actual fact, is corrosive. Did you find that to be true?Comment

I couldn't tell ya... I can't tell when firing whether a cartridge is corrosive or not, and I don't sit around after firing my rifle to find out. I clean them within an hour or so regardless of using corrosive or non-corrosive primers.
Up here in Minnesota, rifles rust extremely quickly if corrosive primers are used. But I never noticed anything out of the ordinary from the Red Army stuff that gave me pause or caused me to not want to shoot the stuff.Comment

I've got a lot of the Prvi Partizan Brass Boxer. It shoots great. But you are going to pay a lot for it, probably close to .75 to .85 per round, that's why God invented reloading ;-) I use it in my Finn M39. The Russians, they get fed the cheap stuff.NRA Certified Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor, Shotgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer

I have heard the Red Army stuff is corrosive
I shoot surplus spam cans, but buy the nice PPU stuff for when I get that far into reloadingMarch 29- April 5, 2019- The Million Mag March. Thank you, Judge Benitez and all the vendors

i just gave up worrying about corrosive ammo. Every mosin test fire i have seen in C&R magazines showed the spam can surplus was every bit as accurate as PPU and other modern ammo. I had a bunch of extra match russian 200 grain ammo and it was about the most accurate mosin ammo you can buy. It is corrosive also.I just cant justify a dollar a bullet vrs .18c a bullet that is just as good. I tip the barrel at the range and spray a water -ammonia mix first. then dry patch it from the receiver. then spray it down with gun oil or WD until i get home to clean it good. NO RUST.Comment

could also keep the brass, from new privi ammo, and sell it to reloaders... getting your cost per round down too.
I'd rather buy once fired (re: its yours; not range brass... and you know its once fired) than buy new ammo for the brass.Comment

I use the Prvi in my M39 too. Great stuff, clean shooting and reloadable, what's not to love?
SGAmmo has a 500 round case of Red Army for $277.50 or 500 rounds of Prvi for $348.75. If you factor in the brass vs steel case, Prvi is the better buy.Comment

I use ammoseek.com and can usually find Prvi Partizan on sale somewhere. Buying 6 boxes at a time, even with shipping, generally brings it down lower than Cabela's price. Sometimes Cabela's has it on sale through the website, and they will ship it free to the nearest store, 3 miles from me.
I'm just willing to pay extra to not have to deal with corrosive ammo.

Walmart is carrying 7.62x54r tulammo now for about 12 bucks a box. Not bad for retail and it's non-corrosive, although i'll need to re-check about the non-magnetic. Having used the Tula in other guns, I can say that it's consistent and high-quality ammo, although it is steel-cased.Comment

The white box cartridges are produced at LVE plant ( old factory188). They are the highest quality commercial light ball I've come across. Quite accurate and consistent. Though unfortunately bimetallic bullet. Excellent in the SVT, i got a bunch when AIM was clearing it out at rock bottom.
This is the exact same stuff but reboxed as Wolf Military Classic, though $10 a box now.
For non-mag the best your gonna do now is Privi for $14 then reload it

"Choot em Maggie, Choot em. Through the years I have shot milsurp ammo with few problems. I have some brass stuff with cracks around the bullet, I throw away. For the most part, I like the steel cased. I just kill paper, sometimes I miss, sometimes I hit.I order from JGsales out of AZ, the price is OK, the shipping is much better than getting it from back East.I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.Comment
