mauser?

a friend recently picked up a mauser that was sporterized and as far as we can tell its chambered in 7x57. it is no doubt military because the barrel has some pitting where the wood sat for years and it is stepped like the military barrels are. my ? is what mfg. made military rifles in 7x57 because there is only a serial numbers and nothing else on the rifle. i would have taken a picture but i didnt have a camara with me.

lots of countries made them in 7x57mm.

Spanish was a big one in the 7x57, but there are others.

Well, if you could give us some more information or pictures, it would help. 7x57 was one of the top 3 cartridges that mausers were chambered in. The other two being 7.65x54 and 8x57. They were made or copied all over the place. 7x57 doesn't exactly narrow it down too much. Do you know what model it is? 1889, 1891, 1892, 1893, 1894, 1895, 1896, 1898? Saying it is a mauser is a bit like saying it is a buick. Without more information we can't really help. A picture of the receiver and bolt would help a lot. And pictures of the sights, if they are still there, would help narrow it down. After that, if we can't figure it out, we might ask you for more specifics.

as for sights the front has a blade sight and the rear has a redfield sight that is off to the side a bit. i dont think its a 98, the receiver looks a little small to me. like i said its been sporterized so the military things are missing and really no identifying marks. i will take pics of it tonight if i get a chance.
