If you have even a passing interest in Mausers, a VZ-24 is mandatory. Buttery slick action and a great shooter. The winged front sight protector is preferable to me over the German style rounded hood and is much easier to install / remove.

The Czechoslovak Armaments Factory started making specially designated vz. 24s in 1938 after the German invasion. Romania was for a time part of the Axis during World War II. "Romanian" vz. 24s have a letter followed by an "R" in the serial number; for example SR 1XXX. Romanian vz. 24s "AR", "BR", "CR"... all the way through "YR" represent different periods of manufacturing, no rifle with "ZR" has been found. The Czechs made 25,000 rifles for each period roughly totaling 625,000 Romanian vz. 24s.
Probably at the end of 1939.

I thought, they only made them in 1938-1939 (and possibly a few in 1940), and G is way below the middle. Or did they not make many in 1938?

I came to my senses and withdrew it Sir. I was going to let it go because I have two but I just couldn't do it. I do believe the 98/29 is about as good as it gets with Mausers.

Started in 1938 after the Germans invaded, and to the best of my knowledge, ended in 1944 when Romania joined the Allies. It more likely could have been 1942, BRNO switched over almost all production to 98K's then.
If anyone runs across a reliable source with the the correct date that manufacture ended, please post it here so I can update my notes.
Strange, that Romy 24's are like Hungarian M-44 Mosins, either in near perfect shape like yours, or they they look like a T-34 ran em over a few times. I've never seen anything in between those two conditions.

It did start in 1938, but Germans invaded Czechoslovakia in 1939 (they only annexed Sudetenland in 1938).

I'm looking for a reliable source of info on the Romanian contract, but no luck so far. When I was looking into it back in the day, I got that the contract was from 1938 through 1939, or possibly through 1940, and that they started marking the rifles' Zbrojovka Brno' instead of 'Ceskoslovenska Zbrojovka Brno'. Mine's marked 'Ceskoslovenska Zbrojovka Brno'.

Hi Nick, I posted the same question regarding the production dates for the Romanian contract on Gunboards and this is what I got:

Hi guys, Long time reader, first time poster. I have a non refurbished Romanian contract VZ-24. It had a DR prefix so I know it would be one of the early ones. Is there a way to get an exact date on my rifle? I've searched this forum and googled and haven't found a definite answer. Any help...
