I recently purchased a 1908 Mauser at a local gun shop for $120. Im currently a gunsmithing student and plan on stripping the rifle and using the reciever, barrel etc for various classes over the course of this next semester. Before i do that i would like to know if anyone could tell me anything about the rifle. I noticed it only has a four digit serial number, is that normal? The receiver is stamped with DEUTCHE WAFFEN-UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN BERLIN 1908. The entire rifle matches and would say its in fair condition. Ill try to get pictures up as soon as possible. I would just like to know if i should leave it be or have some fun with it. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have a Gewehr 98 made by DWM or Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken Aktien-Gesellschaft (German Weapons and Munitions Works), and made in 1908. It was the standard german army rifle of WWI, so these rifles have plenty of history. Does it have an import mark?
I'd love to see a photo.

If it is a WW1 bring back, it certainly is not a Brazilian contract rifle, since Brazilian troops were not invited to the big conflict in Europe. I take it, it is chambered in 7.92x57 (8mm) Mauser?

Why would you want to screw with it if it's in good shape?sigpic

Sure, if there were 30,000,000 Mona Lisa's.
I do understand where you are coming from there a hundreds of thousands of very generic Remington 700's out there as well as loads of very inexpensive Savages.
Also one of the reasons I offered up items from my garage, got a VZ-24 (Czech made Large ring Mauser, pretty much a 98) action laying around that I bought at a gunshow 7-8 years ago.Comment
