    CMP .308 vs .30-06

I am thinking od selling my GP-100 revolver and adding a little cash to purchase the rebuilt or Special Grade Garands in .308. Since I have an LR-.308, I am inclined to stay with a caliber that I have, rather than add another caliber.

    Any thoughts against this idea?

In the state of CA,I don't think I would sell a pistol to fund another firearm.Best to keep the pistol and save for what is wanted.
06 v 308...there isn't much difference at all,for the reloader its a plus for both as the selection of components isvery wide.
Recoil is a little lighter with the 308,for the reloader you will use less powder and if not a reloader there is more surplus ammo on the market.
If you ever wanted to accurize the M1 ,the 308 is the better choice!

Well, it was intended to shoot .30-06 and most of them are .30-06 so in terms of finding Garand-safe ammo that's kind of the easiest (do they even make Garand-safe labeled .308 or do people just get something around 150gr and hope for the best?), and you don't have to worry about some bozo popping out the plastic widget that they stick in there to prevent somebody from putting in a .30-06 clip and screwing something up. The CMP has surplus .30-06 still, and it's decent ammo.

If you really strongly don't want another caliber that probably trumps all the other considerations. But if you reload it's no big deal, you're going to be using the same powder, bullet, and primers either way. If you don't it just means ordering a bunch of ammo cans from the CMP while you're at it. I don't see it as a big deal.

Would you like to be able to buy AP and other exotic rounds for it? 30.06

the Criterion barrels used by CMP are claimed to be made to mil-spec. that would mean the rifle can handle any NATO-spec 7.62 ammo.

interestingly, to accomplish this the gas port diameter is enlarged.

to the question, I would not sell a handgun to fund a niche rifle.

I have two .308 M1' match rifles and I say they are a lot nicer shooting and maybe more accurate then 3006 match M1's.

The .308 seems to recoil very similar to an M1A, sharper but smoother cycling with less receiver banging then an 3006, also less rifle movement for 2nd shot/rapid fire.

So its your choice, its as close as you can get to an M1A and maybe more reliable.

Keep the GP-100, you can always pick up a lever action some day in .357 and you can share ammo between them. I would get a .30-06 Garand first, then a .308 later. Mostly because Garand safe ammo is less expensive for .30-06 because it's surplus. You can always reload them too to save money. The only difference between the .308 and .30-06 will be the cost of the dies, all other components will be the same.

With the 30-06 you have to use Garand spec ammo or use an adjustable gas plug. With the 308 you don't need an adjustable gas plug and don't have to worry what ammo you shoot in it.

Commercial ammo be it 30-06 or 308 Win is generally catered to bolt guns. Buyer still needs to look around for Garand safe ammo be it for 30-06 or 308 Win.

OTOH, if you reload, then its a non-issue.

Thanks for the replies. I just don't shoot the GP100 that much. I have a RIA .45 compact that has become my range gun. I have watched these rifles go up each and every year. I remember when I could get a nice rifle for $500 about 20 years ago. I am not into GI wood or specific receivers. I like the idea of a refurbished receiver with new wood, barrel, etc. I am not knocking the .30-06. It has it's place in history. Just looking to get a "Garand" with the convenience of shooting a caliber that is in my stable.

Since I have a LR-308, I like the idea of caliber consolidation. I try to keep at least a thousand rounds for each rifle caliber that I shoot. I am not into resale. I know the .308 would bring less of a premium if I bought it and sold it later on. I do like the idea of accurizing later on, possibly for amateur competitions.

                      I appreciate the feedback...

                        Either way, they're great rifles.

Well, everything is a go. I sold the GP100 to a Calgunner who was very happy with the deal. I honestly won't miss it much. I am a rifle guy more than a pistol shooter. I now have the cash to pay off my Visa when the deal goes through. I have one more night to sleep on .308 or .30-06. I like the idea of the .308 being a tad more accurate, the lighter recoil, and that my LR-308 gets fed on the same round. But the idea of competition still intrigues me and I have read that the .308 Garands are excluded from competitions.

After tomorrow, I will be whining about the wait.

I believe it's the John C Garand match. The rifle has to be as issued. Not sure though, I've never been in a Garand competition.
