    Smith & Wesson Model 58

I'm traveling out of state and always have my C & R FFL with me. The S & W Model 58 was introduced in 1964, does anyone have serial number info on the 58 whereby year of manufacture can be determined?

Serial number would have to start with an "S" and it would be considered a "Pre Model 58" IIRC . The following series of serial numbers are approximate. 1963-1964, S232000-S235999 per SCSW, 2nd edition. HTH...c good

      Just as a FWIW...

...there's a kindle version of the catalog...

...so anyone with a smartphone could download it and have it always available!

      Gotta love tech!

I have a 58 4 inch and that is an awesome pistol except when shooting some hotter loads. Hopefully it falls in between serial numbers so you can get it.

Thanks for the info and help. I saw my 1st Model 58 about 45 years ago in a local "sporting goods" store back in MA. Used, was going for about $100.00 which, a friend assured, was way too much $$$. Probably was at the time. But every time I see one and think "damn that's too much" a few years later I see the price has gone up - and I still got no 58. So the next time, I'm buying. Using the C & R, but if not, with an agreeable seller & FFL I'll try doing the "Single Action" exemption. Have tools, will buy ....

Having shot both, I can tell you that the "fit and finish" is much better on the 57. If it were me, I'd hold out for a good deal on a model 57 instead. Or, if you want to take it to the 21st century, you can get a 357PD. That's what I have now...

There is no such thing as a pre model 58 the 41 magnum did not exist until 1964. And model numbers startd around 1957-58. So very few will be 50year C&R exempt and will be hard to prove and convince someone otherwise unless you have among the first few made.

FYI, you only have 7 days to do it, when then SEE goes away.

The exemption loophole for revolvers being converted to single action only is not going away.
