Nice. I have a US Property marked Savage 720 from 1942. My understanding is that for some reason the Browning A5 pattern guns didn't work well when cut down to riot or trench gun size, so most ended up as aerial gunnery trainers or at an officers club for skeet shooting.

This one has a 26"(?) tube. It isnt a trench or even a riot. This sportsman never made it to aerial gunnery or even a guard shack.

Nice. I purchased a M11 recently, and it is in UPS Limbo currently. It sucks that it takes 2 weeks to deliver something from California to Virginia.

That seems odd to have a US marked full length barrel. Very nice looking gun.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

I don't think that is correct. They were purchased by many different depts for different purposes with different barrels lenghts. I've seen pics from an ariel gunnery school by Kingman Az where they trained turret gunners for bombers. They had them mounted in tandem on swivel turrets with a modular dual trigger setup.

IIRC none were made in "trench" config. But were widely used in riot lenght for various guard details.

A friend long ago had an early Savage variant that had no bolt handle or release. It had a knurled section of the barrel for working the action. Load one, shove the barrel back, top off the mag. WEIRD

That sounds like a Winchester 1911 shotgun.

A friend's dad served on the Yorktown in WWII. He brought back a Rem 11 with a Cutts compensator they used for gunnery practice.

The navy marked 11's are nice.

This one doesnt have naval or the 'military finish' stamps. No cutts comp either. The but plate is a brown bake lite material. I didnt check to see if the barrel matches the receiver. This thing is clean clean clean!

The A5 design works great at virtually any barrel length. The fact that you can tune the recoil spring and friction ring gives great latitude with many types of ammo.

Very cool find. I don't know anything about the military use of these shotguns, so I have a question about the engraving. I know commercial versions had the engraving and name stamped into the bolt, did the military ones just get pulled from the commercial gun line and get proofed for military use? I dont recall seeing any design work like that on military rifles during WWII.

I dont know much either. I read that WW2 M11s come in serial #s 400, 000 and 700, 000. Mine is in the earlier block. I wonder if the later examples lack engraving.

In order to fill the military contracts--these were used in the initial training phase of aerial gunners, Remington, Savage and other manufacturers pulled existing commercial guns--hence the sporting scenes. Later war pieces lack the engraving.
Legend has it the "military finish" roll stamp was as a disclaimer of sorts for the lack of polishing prior to bluing on the later pieces.

Which will also beat the crap out of you if you don't tune the friction ring components properly for heavy loads.
