Cutting back the wood & drilling into the action isn't really what I'm into for this particular piece. MAYBE with one of the others, but this one is just.....well, look at it. Same year. Same arsenal. #'s all match. Beautiful condition. Yeah, I saw the results. But destroying the authenticity/originality of this rifle & all the history behind it isn't worth anything but (MAYBE) sub 1/2 MOA groups, sourdoughbread man!

You have me hang'n...I don't know of any other way to mount a scope, whether a side mount or top rings except to drill into the receiver. The only other conceivable manner I can think of is some form of custom designed clamp. But even then; where would you be able to place it? Sub 1/2" MOA groups wont come without work!

Ok, don't be a Bubba. If your gun is in original condition, even if it is used, don't chop it up or put a scope on it. There are only so many original guns out there. Don't ruin it by trying to make a second-rate sporter. If you HAVE to make a carcano sporter, go get one that some other Bubba has already chopped up. There are plenty of them out there for not a lot of money. Trust me. I have spent many hours going through the junk bins at the local shops. There is nothing more heartbreaking for a collector than finding what was a good, and sometimes extremely valuable gun that has been chopped up by Bubba and his Rusty Hacksaw of Doom. Some day in the future, do you want some other collector, or even your kids looking at something you did and shaking their heads while they ask themselves what the heck were you thinking?

            Monkeyboy-
You aren't saying anything that I haven't already conveyed.
