Type 38 Monopod?

Hey friends,


Gotta a question with a Type 38. A friend has one with a monopod. This one is interesting as it is not a Type 99 band/mount. It fits perfectly and it is a solid piece of steel. He had Honeycutt's book on Japanese weapons and it is the same band/mount & monopod found on Type 38 and 97 sniper rifles. No serial or assembly number to match and I don't believe they numbered those parts, so that leads no where.

So... did non-sniper 38s come with them, at any point, or not?

Type 38's were not fixed with monopods. The only T-38 action to carry a monopod was the Type 97.
If it's on his T-38, it's simply the band/pod from a T-97.

The Type 97 had a specific monopod/midband that was similar to the early T99 Long Rifle part. It shouldn't have a serial number, but it will have arsenal acceptance stamps. The difference between T99 and T97 monopods is the placement of the sling. T97 goes on the bottom; T99 on the side.

That is what my friend said and the book as well. He just found it funny and we were both wondering about it.

It is definitely for a T97, but it came with the gun, which is a run of the mill Type 38.

There were a few Type 38 snipers that were made, but none of them had the monopod that I can recall. Sounds like you got a mix master of parts?
