I think it's a mauser 98?

Need some Mauser pro's. I have a mauser in 7mm rem mag. I'd like to get a new trigger for it as the one it has is way too light. And possibly a new safety.

My buddy gave it to me years ago and i don't have details on the rifle anymore.

It's been sporterized. The stock has been replaced with a hogue overmolded rubber stock.

The receiver has the letter A and 4 numbers behind it. The logo has been covered up by the scope base. On the other side of the receiver it has the letter V stamped on it and nothing else.

I don't see any marking on the bolt.

The bottom metal has the number 74 stamped on it.

The rifle cocks when you raise the bolt.

The safety is at fire at about 4 o'clock and and safe at about 1 o'clock.

The trigger guard screws are about 7 3/4 inches apart.

Again, the whole reason i'm asking is to replace the trigger and also i would like to convert it to a horizontal type of safety compared to the current verticle safety.

Any help is appreciated.

Mauser 98 style, commercial and military, have a definite step at the rear end of the receiver ring. Basically, the only external visual differences between a military receiver and a commercial receiver would be the thumb notch in the left hand rail and the charger clip hump. Most commercial receivers lack these, though early FNs may have them. 98s have a deeper thumb notch than 95/96 style. But, the easiest way to confirm if it is a large ring 98 style action is the step at the ring.

That doesn't sound like the safety on any military Mauser I know of.

It could have a military style bolt shroud with an aftermarket safety installed. Many early commercial Mausers used military bolt shrouds.
I can't see anyone in their right mind making a small ring Mauser, even a small ring 98 Mauser, into a 7mm Remington Magnum.

7-3/4" trigger guard will make it 98 length.
Why is the light trigger pull an issue? Have you had the rifle apart to see what kind of trigger is in it? I'm guessing it is already an after market. If so it can probably be adjusted by almost any gunsmith.
If you want to change the trigger one of these is pretty easy to do though you may have to trim the stock to get it in.
