    Spanish Mausers

So I got my hands on a Spanish Mauser I think. No markings, except serial numbers and two crowns on the bolt release. Doesn't even have a caliber marking. Has the hole in the receiver to vent gases I was reading.

Are these the ones re chambered to 7.62x51?

That Spanish Mauser in the Samco ad looks just like my Swedish Mauser M1938 short rifle in 6.5X55 mm. Probably looks just like a Spanish Mauser in 7X57 mm, and maybe a few others I'm not thinking of at the moment. Small-ring Mauser barrel threads are the same. It could be 7.65X54 Argentine.

You need something a little more substantive to go on before you put live ammo in that thing.

For an indication, slug the bore. 7.62 would have .300 bore and .308 grooves. A chamber cast is the safest way to know the chambering. But you can get a pretty good idea (once you've slugged the bore) to see what does and does not chamber. I.E. a 30-06 and a 7 mm Mauser will be too long if it's a 7.62X51.

        Safe Shooting,

          Spanish Modelo 1916

A lot of these 1916 Spanish Mausers were rebarreled for the NATO 7.62x51 ammo. The safest way to check is to slug the barrel.

One of the distinctive features of the Spanish 1916 Mauser is the sling attachments are on the side instead of on the bottom as in the traditional Mauser. Here is a pic of mine. It shoots the original 7x57.

I placed a long eye relief scope on the rear sight. This scope attachment can be removed and the rear sight replaced if I ever want to sell it.

It is not the most accurate thing ... However, it is a lot of fun to shoot!

It could be either 7x57 or 7.62. I don't have any experience with the 7.62 versions, but my 7x57 is a sweet shooter.

Is there a Samco import mark under the barrel?

OP, please refer to this recent thread covering the M1916 Spanish Mauser and their proper ammunition.. Read it in its entirety for the correct answer to your question.

The M1916s were never chambered for use with 7.62 NATO or .308 Win. ammunition.

I keep seeing Spanish Mausers at gun shows in the $200 range. Thought about getting one but I don't shoot 7x57, and I don't know much about them. They look nice, though...

Mine is a pre 1899 antique by Loewe thankfully never molested by a CETME chamber/barrel.

The flat bottom bolt and internal quide rib in the reciever makes the 1893 the slickest/smoothest of all bolt guns I've ever used.

The 7x57 is the most widely used sporting caliber world wide and has been forever. Gotta be something to it.

Don't forget this thread as well:

I have an FR-8 which is a large ring, and that can definitely do 7.62 NATO. However, I just use a 150gr plated 308 from Xtreme over 13gr of red dot as a light plinker for younglings and new shooters.
