Since the Springfield Armory M1A is patterned after the M14 does it qualify as a C&R eligible firearm, just wondering.

Nope, it's not on the ATF's list and I'm pretty sure you won't find one that's 50 years old until ~2024.

It is the age of mfg. not the age of the design.

c&r is specific to the individual firearm not the type

there are some modern unique ones on the list but generally it has to be old

if you do not have one yet find a old one before 1985. much better parts. the receiver is hand finished.

Welcome cherokee2, an M1A unfortunately isn't C&R as previously stated by others. However, there is a great alternative that is C&R - the M1 Garand. Even better news is the CMP sells them for less than an M1A. If you want one in 7.62x51 they are available as well from private sellers.

Good to know, I thought they sold out of the .308 Garands last year or early this year. OP, the CMP is your best bet for a .30-06 or .308 Garand.

That was the Navy Garands, They still have the special they build with new 308 barrels.

There is no magic cutoff date for good ones or bad ones, all GI parts, no GI parts, or mixture of parts. Good receivers or not so good receivers, forged or cast, op rods, bolts, sights, small parts, etc, etc. You have to know what you are looking at, and be able to asses each individual rifle. This goes for any and all manufacturers of M14 clones from day 1 to now.
