    Scoped 1891 Argentine Mauser

My sons and I shoot in a monthly vintage military rifle silhouette match. This match is fired from 200 to 500 meters, with several categories of rifles, including "as issued", which is self-explanatory, and an "open" category for scoped rifles, which are otherwise as issued.

For years I shot "as issued", but my eyes have steadily made it harder to use iron sights, so last year I tried open. I can't bring myself to drill and tap an otherwise as issued rifle, so I went on the hunt for a suitable rifle that already had the "dirty work" done. I soon found a beautiful Persian Mauser, otherwise as issued, but drilled and tapped. I shot the match with this rifle and enjoyed it immensely, shooting several 38/40 and 39/40's with it.

I've always loved the '09 Argentine Mauser and have several that are in good shape. After my experience with the Persian Mauser, I really wanted to try a scoped '09 and was able to find one that rivaled the Persian in condition and likewise had already been drilled and tapped. This '09 is an amazing shooter and I've had great luck with it at the match.

Since then I've kept an eye peeled for other military rifles that were "as issued, but scoped" . Recently I glommed an 1891 Argentine Mauser in such condition.

These are the auction pics. When I receive it, I'll post condition and range reports.

Thanks, Watt. Buying one of these on line is always an act of faith, so I'm hoping for the best.

Hope to have it by this month's match. The cool thing is that it is an antique, so it is coming straight to my door.

Looks to be in great condition. Are the scoped ones less expensive like a sporterized M1917, 1903, or Mauser would be?

Thanks, Enfield. The scoped ones are less expensive than the unmolested versions. They usually aren't much more than the cost of the gunsmithing that was put into them to sporterize them.

Very nice! The 91 argentine is arguably the smoothest mauser action that exists. Most have gorgeous bores too and by the look of that thing, it was well taken care of. Can't wait to see how she shoots.

                  Thanks, KH

I'm really looking forward to shooting it. The '09 Argentine is an amazing shooter with 174 gr SMK's and IMR 4320.

Here is a group that my son shot with the '09 at Sac Valley last month, at 200 yards. The first shot was a cold bore and hit at 12 o'clock The next 4 went 8 and 9 O'clock. The 4 shots were about 1.5", or about .75 MOA. The overall group, including the first shot was just over 1 moa.

Here are the Persian and '09 in shooting trim...

Nice! I'm thankful I'm not shooting scoped as I'd have a hard time keeping up with those beauties!

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

I've seen you shoot irons, Brian, and have to say that I'm just as thankful not to be shooting against you and your Finns.

Are those .308 AMKs? Is the argentine not .311? I have a 1891 that I may employ in a CMP match. I thought the bores were .311 and I haven't seen SMK's in that size. Would love to have a '91 safe but accurate load. Thanks!

The 7.65 Argentine does indeed have a .311 bore. The 174 gr Sierra Match King is a .311 bullet

Sweet. I'll have to find those. Finding .311 projectiles is sometimes hard, or at least it was hard when I was looking.

I recently bought a box of 500 from Midsouth. Looks like they still have them in stock.
