every time i think of Japanese Swords in ww2, i'm reminded of this fantastic scene from the novel "Cryptonomicon", by Neal Stephenson, part of which takes place in the Pacific Theater in ww2. This particular scene takes place between Ronald Reagan on a PR mission and one of the novel's main protagonists, US Marine Bobby Shaftoe:

“Ronald Reagan has a stack of three-by-five cards in his lap. He skids up a new one: "What advice do you, as the youngest American fighting man ever to win both the Navy Cross and the Silver Star, have for any young marines on their way to Guadalcanal?"

Shaftoe doesn't have to think very long. The memories are still as fresh as last night's eleventh nighmare: ten plucky Nips in Suicide Charge!

"Just kill the one with the sword first."

"Ah," Reagan says, raising his waxed and penciled eyebrows, and cocking his pompadour in Shaftoe's direction. "Smarrrt--you target them because they're the officers, right?"

"No, f*ckhead!" Shaftoe yells. "You kill 'em because they've got f*cking swords! You ever had anyone running at you waving a f*cking sword?”

I think HBO's "Pacific" got Shaftoe's feelings pretty right in this scene, ey?

"If the American Left wanted to decrease interest in shooting, they should have the government make it mandatory like they do here in Switzerland. Nothing makes you not want to do something like when the government makes you do it."

      "I'm over you." -Citadelgrad87

Sure glad as can be that my pristine Arisaka T-99 found me instead of the bottom of Tokyo Bay.
