I bought a Radom P64 quite a few months ago from SOG. I had it shipped to a dealer in Las Vegas, then picked it up with my FFL03. I have been far too busy to actually have shot it unfortunately but today, I finally had a chance to put a few rounds through it.
I have to say, I was really impressed with it. I ordered the Wolff spring kits, both the recoil and the trigger spring but I didn't have time to install them yet and I was kind of curious to see how bad the stock trigger and springs were. People always report how snappy the P64 is but I have to say, to me, the little gun shot beautifully. The DA trigger was stiff but nowhere near the un-shootable 25lb trigger others have complained about.
The SA trigger was beautiful, it felt like perhaps 3 or 4lbs? Smooth, little take up, not gritty at all. I don't have great eyesight and to be honest, I was concerned about my hit ratio using the almost comically small sights. I shot two other pistols today and lo and behold, the other two pistols had modern, large 3 dot sights and I shot much worse with them. I am no crack pistol shot at all but I was able to place four shots within about 3" at 15 yards, which for me, is pretty decent.
The magazines were easy to load and the 6 + 1 capacity of the gun is a little light but I think it will be fine for my purposes. My sample has an immaculate barrel, a little holster wear and a really ugly, huge import mark. So yes, mine is not beautiful like some I have seen, but overall, I am impressed with the gun. I took it apart to clean it yesterday before shooting today and the build quality, while a little rough in a few places, was overall pretty impressive. Nothing like an all steel pistol, they make my plastic guns feel so cheap in comparison.
If you have been on the fence about buying a P64, AIM and Classic have both had some beautiful samples for sale over the past few months, so I say snap one up. I had no issues at all with slide bite, the recoil was mild, not snappy at all. I shot RWS brass boxer 95 grain RN. It was funny, after shooting this gun, I moved to my M&P Shield 9 and the 9mm seemed a lot more powerful than the 9x18 Mak but overall, I don't think there is a huge difference in power. The Shield is plastic and lighter and yes, the 9mm round is a bit more powerful but the difference between the perceived recoil, noise, etc. was noticeable. Funny because when I shoot big guns like .44 Magnums, if I shoot my 9mms in the same session, all of the 9mms seems like .22s. Guess your perceptions change based upon what you are shooting.
I like inexpensive guns if they are well built and perform and the P64 more than met my expectations. I may install the Wolff spring set but I was surprised at how not terrible the stock stuff was. Didn't get a picture of my target but at least there are some pictures of the gun.
