How to lighten up wood grips on Star B 9mm

I picked up one of the Star B guns from J&G recently. I'm really happy with the purchase, and am wondering if there is anything that I can do to lighten up the color of the wood without damaging it? (I don't want to use a heat gun or sandpaper.) I'm thinking like some simple green and a nylon scrub brush? What is the right spray or chemical to use? WD-40? I don't want to leave the wood dry and brittle afterward, and I do have feed n' wax standing by...

Thanks in advance for any help.

CitriStrip. I know BobbyR has used it on some of his rifle stocks. I have some, but haven't used it yet

I'm not sure what things like simple green or mineral spirits (and the like) would do to the wood

Take a small black trash bag, fill it with kitty litter, stuff the grips inside, and leave it on the hot dash of your car in direct sunlight for a few days.

If you want to lighten the color, I've succesfully used furniture refinisher. It will strip the old oil and crud. Because it evaporates so fast, it doesn't harm wood. Then you could either re-stain the color of your choice or oil it with BLO or the like....

Is the dark color on the grip varnish? If so, try oven cleaner.
I sprayed my mom's little condiments rack that was too sticky with cooking oil, after a few minutes, it stripped the dark varnish when I scrubbed it with scotch brite pad and warm water.

              Have you tried lemon juice?
