I inherited stuff from my old man last year. My interest was and still is Warsaw pact relics. K98 is kinda new to me. Anyway I got this deer riffle and ran 120 rounds last year. Action is real smoth compare to my mosins, almost like butter. It was bubba and converted to 30-06 back in a late 50s. This riffle is full of inspection marks.
I ran a bore snake same as I do with mosins and back in a safe. Bore looks bad now. What do I need to do to restore it? Thanks

Looks pretty light, ckean like normal. .clp patch, copper brush, clp swab ..then oil pacth final coat. Not a bad looking rifle, wood has some character

Looks like a legit older hunting rifle conversion that could use some cleanup. Do what broker said and you should be good to go, probably a great shooter.

Like BrokerB said, easy cleanup. Run a patch soaked with solvent down the barrel and let it sit while you work on the rest of the rifle. Be sure to put a rag under the barrel because it will drip onto your table or floor. Once your done with the rest of the rifle, run a dry patch through to soak up the solvent (you may need two or three patches), then follow with an oiled patch and call it good.

The bore is good - it's just fouled with copper. Clean as above, and the solvent will take care of the copper.

Looks like a nice rifle. Too nice to call it a "Bubba." I'd like to see some closer details of the stock. It looks like the darker wood (walnut, maybe) was inlaid into the light wood (curly maple?).

True this. I am sighing because you have it and I don't. That is actually a really nice sporterizing job. Truth be said, I would rather have a sporty k98 re-barreled to a 30-06 than a modern bolt action rifle. I just get all calf eyed when I see a rifle like yours.

Now, go clean that rifle up and shoot the piss out of, then go kill a deer with it. I'm effin' jealous.

Well - it's not my rifle, but I do have two sporterized K98's... one in the original 8mm and the other rebarreled to 30-06. They are my two pig guns, with the 30-06 being the primary.

CLP is not a bore solvent, get yourself some ammonia based bore solvent and scrub that copper out with a good bronze brush (rinse with water after use to neutralize ammonia) and patch till no more blue comes out, then lightly oil.

I don't know if you are right or wrong - but I will say that I tend to discount any product that advertises by bashing competing products. Maybe if that information came from a site that wasn't trying to sell me something else, I might give it more weight.

Just got back from a range. Ran 15 rounds of 30-06 and 80 of 7.62x54. I forgot how much this k98 kicks. Only went to 100 meters. Group from k98 is tight no comparision to my mosins but recoil sucks big time. I need to order a recoil pad for it. I reload for mosin and picked up some supplies for 30-06, hoping that it will take some of the kick out of it.
Ran some foaming bore cleaner and bore is nice now. Sorry about a phone pics. Thanks.
