30-06 boresnake is all I use for my rifles. 6.5mm is a little tight, but still gets through

If you are going to use commercial ammo then it shouldn't be an issue.

If you are going to use the corrosive ammo, might as well shell out for a Dewey rod so you can punch a H2O-soaked patch, dry the bore, then oil it.

emcon5: You know you periodically wash the bore snake right?

OP: In the long run you might want both. The bore snake will get most of the gunk out quickly, even just running it through dry at the range while the gun is hot will work wonders. Even if you use a regular rod/patch system getting most of the crud out first will save a lot of time.

That being said some guns will eventually have accuracy issues if you don't really scrub them out periodically. You might also need rods for initial cleaning of rifles, dealing with corrosive ammo, and a bunch of other reasons. So you'll probably need a rod at some point, although you could also probably get by for quite a while without one.

We use neither. The only brush that touches a bore here (and it's rare) is a nylon brush in the chamber only. No brushes ever touch a Swiss rifle bore, or any other bores we have.

Have never had a rusty bore with my boresnake even shooting corrosive ammo

I use both. Each has its place and advantages and dis advantages.
Anyone with bolt action rifles(mil surplus or more modern) should have a bore guide and a one piece cleaning rod.

No. Do you crap in your bores? Do you use underwear once and done?

                    Silly analogy.

Agreed. I wouldn't take it that far perhaps but I mostly see it as a sign of the times. To me a large part of owning and shooting these babies is relaxing afterward, having a couple brews and a little cleaning party. I sit on the floor in the living room with the TV on, the kids ask me what I'm doing, I clean for a little while, relax, and get to fondle my rifles a little longer. It's win win win. I also don't really use a brush unless I've got a new acquisition with a bore full of crap. Old-school mostly though, Hoppe's no. 9, brass patch-loop, I run about 5-7 through and call it good, I don't want them coming out squeaky-clean, just clean enough. One through with oil and then I put 'em away, after some cuddling....

Sounds like a bore snake would be perfect for you. ;-)

Depending on the cleaning I'll use either a bore snake or a cleaning rod. For a quick clean after a range trip, I'll run a bore snake through, give it quick wipe down with an oily rag and call it good. If I'm doing a more thorough cleaning, I'll use a cleaning rod. I don't shoot corrosive ammo so I don't have to work about corrosive salts in the barrel. If you shoot corrosive I would recommend using a cleaning rod.

I usually use the Otis cleaning kit. Same concept as a bore snake but uses cotton patches.
