    My Mosin

I bought my mosin in January and cleaned it up. I didn't get to shoot until March. I didn't shoot corrosive, just the PPU brasses cased. Stored it in my closet and took it out again in July I think. I Finally got around to doing a deep cleaning last month. I feel bad. I didn't find any rust but it was irresponsible of me to wait so long to clean it. I never used corrosive ammo at all. If I had, I would have cleaned it right away. Now that it's clean I oiled it up and stored it in in my Plano case in the closet. The bolt is slick again and I feel proud of the work I did. It's just hard with the late hours I work to get up during the day.

Shooting Non-corrosive ammo and not cleaning it afterwards isn't a problem. It probably wasn't very dirty unless you ran hundreds of rounds through it. I used to clean my guns thoroughly after every range trip but now I just give them a wipe down with an oily rag and clean them well about every third range trip.

OK. So. You didn't deep-clean your rifle after shooting NON-corrosive ammo, yes?

Good. Clean it too much and you can wear the barrel out more than you think. I clean my barrels every thousand rounds or so unless I am shooting the dirty stuff.

And then you posted pictures of a typical Mosin-Nagant bolt.

                    Uhh. I dont get it.
So I was driving home from the range and I noticed that the scent of warm steel, burnt gunpowder and lukewarm coffee combined and smelled oddly of... Peanut butter?! Man, the Hoppe's is going to my head.

No biggie about the cleaning, and welcome to the c&r club. As for the bolt, looks like it might be a little minor surface rust, or could be dried cosmoline. Try some Kroil to remove it. Otherwise, as the other's said, unless you're shooting corrosive, not cleaning is no big deal, and overcleaning has historically been the largest cause of wear in rifle bores. Enjoy your mosin and try to get out and shoot her more, she'll thank you for it.

OP, what others have said... no big deal at all. And you shouldn't shy away from shooting corrosive ammo. It's great stuff, inexpensive, and comes in very cool cans. Adds less than five minutes to your normal clean up (use hot soapy water, then follow with CLP).

As to nut rust... that's whole new thread.

Yea - no biggie (Bump-it/drive one)
BTW - I check ALL of my guns once a month, no matter if I've shot them or not.
I am curious though about this:
" Now that it's clean I oiled it up and stored it in in my Plano case in the closet."
Personally I wouldn't keep in a gun case (unless you have no choice) a guns' gotta breath
"The only thing necessary for the triumph [of evil] is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke speech of 23 April 1770, "Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents," delivered to the House of Commons.

                              .
Is this with the russian steel cleaning rod?

mine gets run through shiny clean after every range trip. typically 100-150 rounds or so on a trip.

but i use a nylon coated pull through cleaner with plastic tips, so no risk of damage there.

about every 3-4 cleanings or so, or whenever there is junk that just wont come out, brass brush gets sent through it, but this is rare. the ammo i load (imr4895) burns pretty clean.

unless hoppes 9 actually does corrode barrels?
