shot corrosive ammo & next day rust

I had watched youtube videos about cleaning after using corrosive ammo(windex). I saw a video where a guy used hot water and dishwashing soap.
Bad idea! I got rust the next morning. How can i remedy this situation and prevent it from happening again.

There is nothing wrong with warm soapy water...just be sure to put a light coat of oil in barrel.

I use carberator cleaner liberally, then Hoppes. I have also used the water, but then spray the hell out of it with the carb. cleaner to displace the water. So far - no rust.

I suspect you didn't follow-up the water-based product with an oil based product and didn't make sure there was absolutely no water remaining.

this. exactly. I use hot soapy water to clean after corrosive ammo including black powder. Just have to dry it completely and oil it.

I wrap a patch around a brass brush and run a few patches with windex first. Then I run Hoppe's #9, then I run oil soaked patches. Last I'll run a couple of dry patches. Seems to do the trick. I've never had any rust in any barrels. I've never used hot water and soap on my rifles.

wow, I just:

1. run a garden hose through the gun.
2. blow dry with air compressor.
3. spray with CLP.
4. wipe

whole thing takes 5 minutes tops.
never a speck of rust.

1. spray mix of water and ammonia down barrel with barrel tilted downward.
2. remove bolt and spray area around face of bolt.
3. dry patch bore from chamber to muzzle only
4. spray hoppys 9 on bolt and chamber and bore.
5. dry patch 2 or 3 times. s
pray chamber with carb spray or WD 40.
6. spray down bolt with good gun oil and also spray inside receiver, chamber and bore. also spray gun oil on last 3 inches of outside barrel and wipe down.

this is all at the range before i go home
that evening or next day at the latest i do some more hoppys followed with many oil patches. I also put motor oil on Q tips and rub oil into every cranny of the receiver metal
before i put the rifle away i use motor oil on a clean rag and wipe down all the metal.
their are other ways but my way works for me.

Hot water, then denatured alcohol to remove the water, then Hoppe's No.9 and finally CLP.

I use an old dish soap bottle filled with water, so you get a bit of suds. While shooting, leave said bottle in the sun so it warms a little. When finished, squirt liberally down barrel and let rifle sit open to dry. Clean with Hoppe's when I get home, finish with oil. No rusty bores here.

WD40 no matter what water mix you use. WD is for water displacing. Lots of it, then bore cleaner and oil.

In about 1943 here is what I observed at the camp elliot range -- I was an observant kid, not an E-1

area set up with work benches --
galvanized buckets with hot soapy water -
E-1 removes bolt -- 1903 -- pokes muzzle in bucket -
inserts cleaning rod with "mop" -
pumps water/soap up barrel a half -dozen or more times --
E-1 moves to work bench , strips ,dries, and oils weapon -
That's all folks --

Hot water dissolves chlorate salts rapidly, soap removes grit and leaves a film on the bore

No ammonia, windex, wd-40 , hoppes, or any other snake oil --

That's how my dad taught me to do it with a couple inches of hot water and soap in the kitchen sink. Obviously this was after he and my mother divorced, and may have been one cause of it, lol.

This is why some of us use boiling water. It gets the barrel real hot and it dries itself. Also helps the ballistol (or oil of your choice) penetrate even deeper. You can skip the ammonia FYI.

Hoppes works just fine, and has for decades. I don't know why you guys go to all that trouble.
Non-chlorinated brake cleaner, not carb cleaner, has its uses cleaning guns, but needs an immediate follow up with a coat of CLP.
