    Long gun.

    Over 50 years old.

California resident not known to you to be a prohibited person.

    You're in the clear.

If you buy a over 50 year old long gun from a FFL 01, they are required to process the Dealer Record of Sale paperwork.

          Private individuals are not.

It is my understanding that the DROS paperwork for long guns is kept on file at the dealer's premises. It is only referenced if their is a question about a specific firearm. Your long guns are not "registered".

If you wish, make a note of the date you sold the firearm and put it in a file. If you want to be thorough, get the buyer's name and other information. However, it is not a requirement unless you are a FFL 03 (C&R) licensee.

California's 50 year old long gun exemption says you don't need to go through an FFL to transfer them between two private parties. But if the seller is a Licensed Dealer then they still have to follow all of the regular transfer rules, like DROS.

DROS only puts handguns under your name. No serial number or make or model or caliber information is recorded with a long gun DROS.

The gun can still be traced to you if it is found at a crime scene. BATFE would get the importer's name off of the weapon and check the importer's "Bound Book" records to see who they sold the gun to first. They would then check the bound book of the distributor who got it next and then the gun shop, which would then lead to you.

You would then just tell the investigating agents as much info as you had about the person you sold the rifle to. That's why many folks prefer to get a name and address and signed statement from a buyer in a cash and carry transfer.

Thats why I don't buy from people that want it nor require it in a 50 yo long gun C&R FTF sale. I'm not going to tell a perfect stranger all that info, if I am buying one gun, I just might own a few more they might want to steal...

yeah, but you are required to get a name and address. How do you go around that then?

Only required if selling to a C&R license holder, FTF PPT it is not required. I doubt if I am selling to a calgunner that has a respectable post count or has been here a while they are going to take the Mosin Nagant I sell them and rob a bank or do a drive by with it.
