Nice! I'm pretty sure mine is a Smith but I have yet to shoot it
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

Congrats that is one nice looking shooter! I have two of them from Monkey Wards days as you can see in the pic. The one on the right has been through an arsenal rebuild (it's parked) but one of the last 1917's made. The one on the left has about 80% or so original finish left on it. The funny thing is that the original finished one is done vary crudely. I love these guns and you will too. Check the cylinder for .45 acp head space because they are the most accurate. The converted .45 long Colt not that accurate. Enjoy it Dave.

A little more info.. mine is a LOW numbered.. 20K!!!! origianal finish to boot!! It has all the correct inspector markings as well.. the only detractor is that the lanyard is missing and the hole has a blind plug in it's place.. Numrich has the correct one and I just might order it. The bore is in perfect condition with excellent lands and grooves with no pitting at all considering GI 45acp ammo at that time was corrosive.

          Nice find!
So instead of buying stripper clips you got clipped by strippers?

FWIW, 255 grain slugs and Blue Dot or HS6 have always worked really well for me in the 1917s. I use a 6 o'clock hold and suppose the bigger, slower bullets tend to hit higher. I know BD & HS6 require more powder than say Win 231 or Bullseye, but it works for me.

I do have a LOT (8K) of my 1911 220gr SWC loads (750fps) I was going to try them and I have a bunch of lead 45LC RN bullets I can load up as well...

                Service # 68860

                service #154571

                # 68860 has the rough war time finish on it.

Only one thing better in pistols than the 1917's IMHO.

Sounds like allot of fun coming up for you. I like the full moon clips. The only drawback is loading them and unloading them from the moon clips. If yours will fire with no moon clips it should be a real good shooter. Some of the early ones they rushed into production and used .45 long Colt cylinders. The .45 long colt shoot good out of it, the the .45 APC not as good but still allot of fun. Dave

I think you are confusing a .45lc cylinder with the earlier model .45acp cylinders on Colt 1917s that are not stepped in chamber to allow .45acp to be fired w/o the moonclip. On later cylinders can be done and just have to poke out empties with a pencil or stick or something.

Well.. I got a chance to shoot my new aquisition... one of my HP shooters gave me 9 full moon clips... no hiccups at all... shoots somewhat decently at 50ft. But getting the empties out of the clips are a PITA!!!!!!!!!!!! double action is a tad heavy but smooth.. single action is sweet!!!!! Using SWC bullets are a slight pain so I ordered 1K of Laser Cast 230gr RN bullets and just for poops and grins I also ordered from Midway, 500 45 Autorim cases. My order from Brownells came in as well..so now I have 39 full moon clips

California Competition makes some good "mooner/demooner" equipment, but looks like you're going the AR case route. I prefer using them to the clips although doing the 1/2 moon & being period correct is nice. Can't remember who makes the nice flap holster, I think the company initials are IPA? You are correct. I was mixing up .45LC conversion with 1917 and .45 acp for 1909 new service colts. You can shoot .45LC with modified cylinder.
