Colt 1862 Police? #6048 info needed

So my mom just brought this down to me and said my grandma found in it in the garage. My mom remembers running around playing with thing as a child have a great time with it. Sadly, it seems to have paid the price for this attention it was shown. I have never messed with anything like this before but from what I can tell it seems to be a Colt 1862 Police 36 caliber. It is serial #6048 and all the numbers match. Can anyone tell me more about it? I know my grandma would love to know more. It has a little "2" on the upper left of the trigger guard. The action still works which was pretty surprising. I know its thrashed, does it have any value left other than being pretty damn cool. Any information or help would be appreciated. Thanks all

I know nothing about it, but I like it!! A great heirloom. Was anyone in your family a police officer?

If it's an original Colt, it'll always be worth something.

Since they make repros now, I'd bet the repro parts will fit if you need replacements, or check out Numrich.

Since it's a family heirloom, I would restore it to firing condition no matter the cost (shouldn't be too bad), and shoot it at least once

Write to Colt and for a fee they will send you a letter about your gun. They did have a flood at some point and lost some records but I forget the year.

gentle oiling and cleaning -- no brillo!
I am sure it has a good dollar value -
too much cleaning will lower the value -

That one was made in 1861, first year of production. Complete, value around $500 to $700. The black spots on the brass frame are the remnants of the factory silver plate, don't clean it off, and don't polish the brass.

Cool, thank you all for your help.

Thanks again Trap! Will definitely be looking for the missing pieces on the site. This one seems a little less complicated than a certain lightning I recall. Take care

                    HAH! Now that's an understatement!
I can see what external parts are missing, and can guess what internal parts are broken or missing. There isn't much to them, but making the replacement parts work right, can be a pain.
Do some digging where it was found, you might get lucky and find some of those parts.
Colt numbered every part on it, with some exceptions during the peak of the Civil War because of production demands. Officers and noncoms had to buy their own sidearms.
If you need help with it, or want it done up like the Lightning, you know where to find me.

Thanks Trap. I will defiantly do some snooping and see if I an find any of the missing pieces. I may have to take you up on that offer depending on what it looks like. Have a great weekend.

I'm just going to repeat what Trap said, DO NOT POLISH IT! I wouldn't even try to clean it without a knowledgeable person present. You could end up cleaning hundreds of dollars off the value very quickly.

I'm think MAYBE a $400 piece. However, since its missing its serial numbered loading lever, serial numbered wedge, and wedge screw, it would not attract the interest of a black powder Colt collector. As a piece of family history, its *****'in. You are one lucky dog Damngato!
