    AKM build for a friend

Figured this might be the best forum to ask this since it is an older rifle....

Have a friend that's looking to build an AKM with a Polish parts kit and asked for my help in putting it together. I had to (sadly) admit that I do not but I did know a few guys to ask.....

Anyone here that's ever put one together from a parts kit that might be able to point him in a general direction for some step-by-step directions to assemble it from a parts kit? Tried doing some google but I couldn't seem to find anything that's pretty dummy-proof (although I'm sure something must exist) so was hoping someone might know a good site/youtube channel I can give him.

In my experience AK build parties are hard to find. Go to some shoot, meet some people and one might pop up one day

This is the subforum that you are looking for:

I don't think that build parties are really going on right now FC1 because of the same rulings about 80% lowers and having to finish them on your own equipment.

Your friend is about two years too late to the AK building boom. While it certainly can be done, what with the cost of the tools required to build one from a flat, it is really not very economical. I would suggest that he buy a finished receiver from someone like NDS and send his kit out to a reputable builder to have it done.

Although he won't get to have one without a serial number like a 80% would give him, he will get a rifle that will function right and look good.

Conversely, this is a kind of "golden era" for AK's right now. Prices are at or below what they were before the panic and for around $500 (or a bit more in the PRC), you can get a quality factory built AK.

I would first read up on the heat treating involved and make sure you can do that or outsource it.

Check the gunsmithing section. Lots of info there. I've built 5, but always from 100% receivers. Even with that there are several tools you'll need. They are available from AK Builders. If you're only building one its not cost effective to go that way.
There may be someone near you that can loan you the basic tools if you have a press. If you have any specific questions, you can PM me.

From the member here, one of teh gurus of AK building:

Short of having a master builder doing it with you - this is probably the best you can get on the how-to of AKM building.

From what he showed me, he's building off of a bent 80% that just needs a few holes drilled out and the rails welded on. He's already got a line on that, he was asking me more for the actual assembly of it once he gets the parts in.

I'll take a look in Gunsmithing and see if I can find him some good info, appreciate the direction
