Congrats on the nice deal. The only thing that would make it even better is if you say you bought it on a trip out of state and brought that beauty into CA from someplace else.

Except for maybe the SKS, I still find good deals on those here and there.

I've been looking for an SVT-40 a bit pricy

Well it shot well. That was the whole point of buying it. Now I just want to sell it, like I said it's just not my thing. And I'm not sure I have the room to keep it in the safe, I have other stuff on the way.

Have you posted it for sale anywhere? And, how much are you hoping to get for it?

I have a 49/56 with the FH and GL neutered just enough for CA law. Put a KVAR side mount on it, looks very good. I'd like to grab a 44, I think the French semis are a good deal and will get better known in CA (and expensive) as time goes by, in part because they have no pistol grip and almost universally use a 10 round magazine.

Well tell us when you post it for sale someplace. It looks like a fun toy. You can make the brass out of 6.5x55 Swedish mauser brass by just runing it through the sizing dies and trimming to length if needed. It uses standard .308" bullets, and is slightly under .308 Win in power. I have a MAS 36 that is entertaining enough for playing, but would not be my go-to gun. The sights are a bit awkward.

I think the magazine design on those is neat, really simple and unlike anything else.
