I can't wait, any one on here from the east bay, or know if the Livermore rod and gun club will allow me to shoot this? I was talking to the guy at big 5 and he said they're kinda skeptical bout it for some reason

what's the best way to get the cosmo out? Just run bore snake through a couple times? Or should I take it down completly and go piece by piece?

        Btw what is cosmoline?

Hope you have lots of gun scrubber.

I'd also consider getting a 12 gauge shotgun brush if you don't already have one and scrubbing the bejesus out of the chamber.

edit - the cosmoline is there to keep it from rusting. Think of it like a condom, but for guns. It's your friend and there to protect your firearm. Getting it off is a big PITA, but I'd rather deal with that as opposed to rust. All my mosins got detailed stripped (bolt and all) when I bought them, and gone over every nook and cranny to get rid of every last vestige of cosmoline.

Follow that guide, and you cannot go wrong.

AFAIK most people tend to shoot surplus x54 in Mosins. Most (all?) surplus x54 is said to be corrosive:

Corrosive Ammunition One fact holds true for all production regardless of year or country, and that is all surplus 7.62x54r ammunition is corrosive. For the novice this sounds much worse than it is. It should be considered that these rifles were used with corrosive ammo for decades through several wars and are often none the worse for wear. When ammo is described as "corrosive" all this means is that the primer contains potassium chlorate which was used as an oxidizer. When the reaction takes place and the oxygen is removed it leaves potassium chloride. A residue of this "salt" is left in the barrel, absorbs moisture from the air and creates a corrosive film. If the barrel is not properly cleaned as soon as practical after shooting it will rust. It is the rust that damages the barrel and not the ammunition itself. The potassium chloride is water soluble so it is easily removed. There are many commercial products advertised for cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo, but a simple 50/50 solution of water/ammonia will do just as well. One patch soaked in the ammonia solution pushed through the barrel and then wiped across the bolt face will do the job. There is no reason to let the barrel "soak" and this can actually do more harm than good if the solution is too strong. Follow the ammonia solution with a dry patch and then clean as you normally would. It is advisable to use the ammonia solution followed by the dry patch and one or two patches with Hoppes #9 or a similar cleaner at the range. This will be sufficient until a thorough cleaning can be done at a more suitable location, preferably the same day. If the bayonet is fixed while shooting it should be cleaned with the ammonia solution as well.

                  Winchester - accurate, powerful, expensive.

The whole point of these rifles is to have a powerful battle rifle that's easy on the wallet.

Bulk ammo for sale including surplus, Hornady, Winchester and many other brands. Cheap, in-stock pistol & rifle rounds with fast shipping today.

My advice - buy 50 rounds of different kinds of milsurp. Some will cycle better than others, so your mileage may vary. I think the hungarian steel heavy ball required a freaking mallet to open the bolt after a shot in my 91/30, but my m38 eats it just fine.

Also before you buy, make sure whatever range you take it to will allow steel core ammo, as majority of the milsurp stuff out there is just that.

And lastly, if it's milsurp, treat it as though it's corrosive and clean it as soon as you can to maintain a healthy bore.

I would suggest completely detail stripping the entire rifle. You will be sure to get all of the cosmo out, and you will know the Mosin like the back of your hand once your done. There really isn't anything you can screw up too bad so don't worry!

I believe they are on sale till this weekend, or whenever the 21st is.

Which models had the hard wood stock and which ones were laminate?

All of them could be had with the laminates, save for the off shoots, such as the finnish models. So the m91 and m44 and even the m38 can be found with lam stocks.

Except for firing pin, putting it back in the bolt left some pits on my kitchen table (which were noticed :s), and I read that there's a danger of breaking it at that point. Also, once you're done, make sure to check the head space on it, and adjust it as needed.

Yeah, folks on the web recommend getting a scrap of hardwood for that part. I went to my local Home Depot, headed over to the scrap pile by the rotary saw, and they gave me a nice bit of oak that was leftover for free!
