yknow, there are some systems which are just "best of breed". Despite the decades that pass, "best of breed" never really change; they just get outdated and replaced with a new system, but some systems just hit a point where they can no longer fundamentally be improved upon.

the mg42 is certainly that as the "best of breed" light MG; as testament to their use today, by militaries all over the world (including the germans) with only the slightest of modifications, 70 years later.

the browning 50cal, the b52, the ak47 also come to mind...

Glennsche - the ZB26 - mg26(t) (3rd and 4th pic down) was a great system, too - I learned to shoot the L4A3 (it's great grand child) as a Cadet in the UK - late 1980's - not as long but still almost 60 years in use by first world countries.

I obviously didn't pay very close attention, I thought it was a British Bren. They do have a close resemblance to one another.
