Need a little help with this K98k *Updated with more pictures!*

I was at one of the LGS yesterday and I found a K98k on the consignment rack that is missing the handguard and the barrel band spring. It's an unpeened DUV 42. It appears that all the serial numbers match that can be seen, except for the rear barrel band, the hand guard and barrel band spring and cleaning rod. And interesting enough the sights are exactly 100 numbers higher. The bolt doesn't match the receiver but does match itself. It has a laminated stock and no indications of being a Russian capture. I only have a few pictures right now but the receiver finish in the pictures is indicative of the whole rifle finish. I'll get more pictures soon but am just trying to get an idea what it might be worth.

    Thanks

What were they asking for it?

I got old eyes, is that an "X" stamped on the letter under the serial?

Trap - it is an "h" block stamp after the serial (actually part of the serial number).

Nice rifle - shame the bolt is mismatched - could have been a super find.
(Presume the stock is serial numbered the same as the action, the other parts are straight forward to find, no barrel shortening, sights still as they should be?)

As is, if nice and unmessed with mechanically still a great piece for the collection, $500-$700 or so, sometimes they ask more -

IMO - nicer to have than an RC for a couple of bills more.

Yes it is missing the hood but other than that. From what I understand mismatched bolts are very common because of how the Allies dealt with "take homes" the bolts were separated from the rifles when captured and as they were given to the troops to take home they were given a rifle and bolt from the piles without regard to matching them . They are asking 400 for it as it sits.

I'd pay that. It is certainly worth more than an RC, even with the missing bits, and RCs are going for that or more these days.

Similar to the K98 I picked up a week or so ago. All matching (everything) EXCEPT the bolt, which matches itself. Other than that and an obscenely obvious duffle cut, it is a sweet natzee bolt gun. Replacement stocks are stupidly expensive, I have also discovered.

Pit, yes I know that, and can see the h, but it looks like a strike across it? Maybe just a scratch?
Reason I'm asking, there were many RC's that got a quick once over, and went right back to the front line, sometimes to change sides once again. But they all got an X before they went anywhere!
Madmox, if it isn't an X, or part of one stamped over that h, $400 is a good price, grab it before someone else does!

Ok, So I finally brought home the K98k. And im looking for opinions on how I did and any general thoughts. Here are a bunch more pictures I added of all the little stamps I could find and more about the general condition. So it looks like the stock and bolt have the same serial number and everything else has another as near as I can tell. Except the sights which are all matched and are exactly 100 numbers after the reciever. There is no electropenciling or force matching and no import marks that I could ascertain. I can take more specific pictures if needed just tell me where of. And there is one set of stamps I just realized I missed a picture of so I'll get those up. The bore seems ok but i'll be the first to admit im not a great judge at this point.
Does anyone have any ideas what may be all over the gun? It looks like something brown was brushed on. You can see it best in the picture of the trigger guard. but is definitely not totally opaque. Maybe cosmoline? Though I've never had a rifle that had it so im not exactly sure what it looks like. Anyway let me know what you think and I'll get that last picture up.

                      Thanks

I also am having trouble making out the stamp under the serial number on barrel channel of the stock.

                              I like it!

                              Nice -

FYI - (it does not affect this rifle) if anyone here finds an all matching untouched K98k, and you truly believe it to be an unmessed with bring back, don't strip the wood off the metal like this - there is often a waxy, compound that is applied at the factory, between the metal and wood, and the hard core collectors know when a weapon hasn't been taken down. It's presence can add to the value of the rifle, and it is gone the moment you strip it.

Just a heads up for the 0.0001% of you that are interested
