Thanks for the responses guys. I've refined my web searches and have found multiple sources for parts (sorry Knucklehead, not looking to do away with it for now). Once it comes together I'll post pics of its final form.

Not too long ago I bought some Type 99 parts from LibertyTreeCollectors.com out of Maine.

I've been looking into them as well. Far as the bolt assembly goes, they have everything aside from the firing pin, which shouldn't be hard to find elsewhere.

I believe I have a bolt I could send you at a good price and give you a 30 day money back guarantee if it doesn't work, if the one you already have doesn't work out for you for any reason.

mine is the original straight bolt with egg shaped knob at the end.

unfortunately that's the only part I have & it does not have a firing pin or any other parts ... its just the stripped bolt.

you can also screwed to the wall in your man cave and it would make a great coat hanger or cabinet door handle as well.

I'm mainly looking for a complete bolt assembly (I'm infamously known for losing parts so I like to keep it all together), but if I can't find one, or can find the elusive firing pin, I'll keep you in mind. Thank you for the offer!

You're not likely to find a complete bolt for less than an arm or leg, unless you get lucky and win a bidding war on fleabay. Seriously though, the arisaka bolt has such a minimal amount of parts a friggin' caveman could put it together. My hacked up 99 had a bare bolt and I got a safety knob, a firing pin and spring, and that was that. You just stick it together and done! If you can source the parts, just buy them. Otherwise, let me know and i'll acquire and assemble it for you. Getting it back to original with that barrel cut down will suck, but if you're like me and want to see it through, you'll do it, and love it, damn the cost to have a mixmaster, it's about preserving history. They're fun to shoot too. I have a great handload for the 7.7

I managed to get a late war last-ditch bolt assembly for 50 bucks shipped, so I got really lucky there.

Not the best but it'll do for now. Most 99's have mismatched bolts and rarely a headspace problem, but I'd prefer to have an early bolt with an early rifle. I occasionally grab parts when the price is right so if I stumble across an early bolt assembly i'll hit you up.

Alright, thanks. Mine's a series 32, so that's towards the end of the war. Late war bolt for a late war rifle. As long as it works I'm satisfied with it, but if I can get a better part I'd be more than happy to.

The bolt should be fine. And once you figure out what it is chambered in, you should be able to build a decent sporter out of it. Have fun, and let us know how it works out.

I heard that the Japanese made crappy guns. Was this true?

This should answer your question , but the short answer is No on earlier models , yes on some last ditch era guns.

I've heard very, very good things about Arisakas in particular as being very strong rifles. The only times I've heard of them ever malfunctioning was when people would fire the wrong caliber

Even the last ditch rifles were by and large serviceable. The rumor that they were bad came about because there were instances of people firing live ammo through training rifles. The training rifles were never ment to be shot and had cast iron receivers.

Arisakas are one of the strongest rifle actions ever made.
