    1903 striker spring

My new to me 1903's bolt handle is very stiff on the upstroke. I have looked for binding and rough edges and have disassembled it a few times. Remember this has the polished (or chromed I can't tell) bolt. I wonder if someone in the effort to create a match rifle might have put in a heavier striker spring? I see 16 lbs is stock but they sell them all the way up to 28 lbs. That would sure cause my symptom.
What about it? Or is there something else I should check?
    Thanks

Try pulling back the cocking piece first prior to opening the bolt. It's it still just as hard to open?

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

With the cocking piece pulled back it lifts like butter.

Then I would look at trying a OEM spring and also check the camming surfaces of the bolt. I have a few extra bolts here if you need to swap one out and try it before buying one.

How is the 1903 head spaced? Or is it the luck of the draw? I ordered a field gauge last night.
