    Opinions on value needed

    Hi all,

A buddy just got what he says is a vintage (1942, Ithaca arms) 1911 from the estate of one of his friends.

He had it parkerized (new springs, other parts are supposedly original). I'm wondering how much that would affect the value? He's asking in the neighborhood of $1k, or I might trade my 92fs +/- cash if its a decent deal. I have seen some that are from about the same period, from Ithaca in the $1k-2k range, but they were not refinished. I'm extremely interested in adding this to my small collection (especially after the boating accident), but I don't want to overpay. But I'm also not looking to get one over on him. I'll pay a fair price.

I really don't know a lot about C&R 1911s. Thanks for your input. Grainy cell phone Pics below. I've requested that he send me better ones with the markings visible.

    Sorry, not sorry.

Depending on the refinish it is hard to tell by the picture, you are looking at 600 to 800.00. It has no collector value. Had it been arsenal reassembled and finished you would be looking at 2K plus. They bring in more unmolested. Is that a Colt slide?

That's kinda what I thought. He said it is marked colt, manufactured by Ithaca. I told him it was a bad idea to have it refinished (unfortunately after the fact.). When I talked to him today, he said he went to a shop to have it cerakoted! The guy at the shop said "I won't let you do that!"...but I will reparkerize it. Wish he had convinced him to leave it alone!

        Thanks for your input.

It is still a part of history. If you do end up with it replace the grips with period correct plastic grips. Check to see if there is a serial number on he back of the slide by the firing pin plate that could give you a bit more direction. Ithaca had some production issues and they were given Colt slides but they were unmarked for the most part. Post better pictures, curious to see what the refinish looks like.

This might help in case you havent seen them.

Thanks for the links! They will come in handy.

I asked him for more/better pictures a little while ago, and I hope he will send them soon. If not, I'll probably get a chance to see it and fondle it next weekend (fingers crossed), and get some more pics at that point. If I get them before, I'll post them up. I might even try to hit him up sometime this week and take a look at it.

I really appreciate the help. Gives me ammo (pun intended) to get it for a fair price for both of us.
