Cabelas has Pietta Remington repro's on sale for two bills

Looks to be a great deal if you want to get into black powder revolvers, and spare cylinders area deal at sixty bucks.

Yeah they went off sale and now they're back on. I might need to get another one but it won't match my old one that was an Uberti made Lyman kit.

How does this one stack up vs other BP Pistols for first buy?

Which ones are more highly recommended?

This is the one I would recommend for a first black powder revolver being it has a full steel frame, the 58' Remington copies are very robust.

You might consider hand size. I've read that Pietta makes the grip a bit larger than Uberti to accommodate "modern" hands.

I must have antique hands because I prefer the grip on my original Remington Beals, but you can't beat the Pietta price :-)

The steel 1858s are definitely the easiest to start with. I love my Colts but the way they're held together is kind of crazy and not something you want to deal with on the first one. Once you get the hang of it get a 1851 or 1860 for the next one when they're on sale (and they will be, eventually, Cabelas is always running sales on these things especially between Thanksgiving and New Years).

Pietta is fine for this model. There are at least one or two versions (1862 pocket) where I don't think the Pietta is as nice but they make a nice 1858. I've shot the heck out of mine and it runs great.

Down the road you can even get a conversion cylinder so they can shoot 45 Colt. I load black powder 45 Colt rounds and they're a good time.

I have two of the Pietta 1858's, long and short barrels. Both bought on sale, no regrets. Spare cylinder is tempting, though.

I'd recommend the 1858 remington too. I'm a complete BP noob, but I bought one of these when they were on a really good sale right after last Christmas. It's a solid revolver.

I bought a long barrel a few weeks ago when Grendl did. Happy with it. May buy a short barrel, too.

Do the spare cylinders go on sale around Thanksgiving and Christmas, too?

                      SWEET!
Ive wanted one of these for long time and finally did it with this sale,
got this and the starter kit for $222 NET after buying gift cards on cardpool
                      for 11% off,
I actually had $130 in gift cards I bought last month that I had not used yet, so my pocket today only felt less than $100 for this

and used my cabelas card for $4 shipping (regular shipping would have been $19), also used my mrrebates link, and that will should get me another 5% off on top.

It will be less money than some used ones I almost bought on the marketplace in the past.

as a model its very good (that exact one; not one will more brass for the frame). It is also nice because it has the cylinder loader / press built into the pistol.

Just remember all the powders for it are corrosive (re: including the modern ones I've used) and its blued. Needs to be cleaned... well... after any use... then dried.

Nope, but Kirst has them (well, sometimes). I converted my Uberti 1858 revolver and carbine with them (with the loading gate and Richards-Mason ejector) , and couldn't be happier
