I have a chance to buy a Gew 71 and 71/84. Checked Gunbroker, but there's too small of a sample size to go off of. Don't know the price yet, but what should I be looking for and can someone point me to some resources so that I can further educate myself? From the terrible pictures I saw, they seem to be in fairish condition. Any advice on what a low-risk, ballpark offer may be?

Like any old weapon condition is all important --
I think the M71 is a little more expensive as it is not as numerous and often not as good a condition as the 71/84 --
Many of the 71/84 were in as new condition -
My first 71/84 was as new and cost $19.95 from martin retting -- c1960
I would not take less than about $600 for either my 71 or 71/84 --
my tuppence -
I purchased my 71/84 in Fair condition from a LGS a few months ago. I paid Retail (before tax and DROS) $350. I would expect private party to price lower.
As for the 71, my experience is very limited to what I have seen, but I would be willing to pay:
$200-400 (Fair condition)
$400-800 (Good+ condition)
This site is a bit out dated, but I've used it for baseline values for several of my purchases: http://rangingthoughts.org/manowar/prices.asp
Hope this helps in your potential purchase.Comment

Went and examined them this morning. One was in clearly fair condition, the other was sub fair with a bunch of surface rust. Both were 71/84s and they wanted $1250 a pop because he "saw some on the internet go for that much and his local gun store guy said they go for that much". Put in offers of $300 each and told them to call me when they don't sell. Did walk away with a few hundred rounds of ammo though.
On a side note, half of estate sale-goers are cutthroat, miserable people with no respect for the dead or living

Crazy how some people just have no clue on ACTUAL value. I saw a 71/84 listed on armslist a while back. Guy was asking $1400...so out of morbid curosity, I contacted him to find out how he arrived at that value. You never know if maybe he had something actually worth that price. Anyway, he says the guy he bought it from, had it appraised in the 1970's. When I asked him for a copy of the appraisal, he just said "That's the price! Take it or leave it!" I sent a 2 word reply..."leave it".
What kind of ammo did you find?
I have only seen 1 71/84 for sale near me (and I bought it), but I will PM you if I happen across another one.Comment
