Red and White band on enfield rifle

Pretty sure this means it's a drill/parade rifle, right? Do share knowledge.

Yes. As far as I know, but those Indians can be tricky I've heard, but yet to be confirmed that certain units painted their rifles like that but the colors were reversed : white red white. And a few with a yellow one in there or 5 stripes instead of three. Who knows as far as that goes, but I tend to stay away from post indepence Ishy and especially anything with paint on it.
    Cheers

When you are talking about bands - yellow, red, and green either on the butt or nosecap or sometimes both then its Australian cadet rifles. If memory serves; green : ok to fire live ammo. Yellow: fire live ammo in emergency only. Red: not suitable for live ammo. A bunch of green striped cadet rifles have been showing up on GB lately. I've also seen some where the yellow or red paint can still be detected and someone is trying to sell it "unknowingly" or knows what it means and is trying to erase it before getting there money out of it.

I fitted an Indian forend on my Lithgow recently. Even though I liked the look of the stripe I didn't like what it stood for. I removed it after this picture was taken. If you are careful it can be done without messing up the finish.

Usually I think the red and white stripes indicate a drill and parade use only for India - but not the Brits. If its a matching stock to the rifle, I wouldn't use any ammo in it - it's a wall hanger only. If its a replacement stock, I would have the gun checked to be sure it is safe to fire.
