    M1a C&R??

I understand the M1a was designed in 1974, based on the 1954 M14 design. Does the M1a automatically become a C&R in 2024 or would there be other hoops to be jumped through? There is probably some other 'whereas' or exemption that will adjust things, but who decides and when? Just curious. Thanks.

It doesn't work like that. Design date doesn't matter, if it did the Remington 870 you can buy today at Big 5 would be a C&R, since they were designed in 1951.

M1a will not be added to the C&R list in 2024. Individual M1a rifles will be C&R based on age 50 years after the date they were manufactured, assuming you are able to prove that date to the satisfaction of ATF.

My Polytech M14s (made in 1989) will become C&R seven years earlier than my M1A (made in 1996).

A design does not become C&R, unless the BATFE grants it C&R status.

Therefore, a firearm becomes C&R when it becomes 50 years old.

So, the date of manufacturer of a specific firearm is used to determine if it is a C&R.

        Example...
        A Springfield Armory M-1A made in 1975 will become C&R in 2025.
        A Springfield Armory M-1A made in 2010 will become C&R in 2060.

Technically yes, but for all practical purposes, the 1975 gun will be safely C&R in 2026 and the 2010 in 2061. Unless you somehow get the exact day the gun was made.

If the rifle was made June 1975, it wouldn't be 50 years old until June 2025.

There was a thread on this subject a while back, apparently ATF takes the view that cases like this the rifle is not C&R until the beginning of the 51st year after the year of manufacturer.

Appreciate all the clarification. Looking at the federal regs just makes my old eyes spin like an ice skater. Thank you for the plain speak. Got it. :-)
