    shooting Garand first time!

I had a blast shooting my "new" rifle form CMP, thanks to an awesome calgunner, phrog111, he showed me field strip, clean procedures and then adjusting sights then shoot fun, we blasted through 3 boxes of ammo... hearing for the first time click of the magazine gave me thrill, unfortunately no pictures, I forgot to take my phone
somehow I expected more recoil, comparing to Mauser or Mosin was much softer on my shoulder, but the bang was loud!
well, there will be another trip next weekend, perfect timing for the 4th of July,
thanks to all of you who were sending me info on Garands and how to get it,
it was worth it, and I am thinking about getting another one, so one will go on the wall and one will be a shooter

The heavy weight keeps the recoil way down, they do shoot smoothly don't they!

Congratulations on owning one very well engineered and manufactured rifle especially the late HRAs and SAs.

BTW, Garands uses clips not magazines.

        Congrats on your new gun.

The Garand is my favorite to shoot too! I really think it's a work of art - perfection. In terms of balance, power, beauty, there is none that can compare.

There is a lot that can be said in favor of clips. In the Garand's case it just empties itself; there's no buttons to press.

Congrats. The Garand has become my favorite rifle. I don't think I'll ever get rid of mine.

With good barrel along with proper load, I know M1s are capable of great accuracy. I've seen M1s beat bolt rifles (yes even the hyper accurate Mosins) at our monthly silhouette matches. However every now and then all my M1s will throw wild flyers (over 12" high @ 500m) for no reason. Go figure!

Been shooting the same Garand since the early 1980's. Still love it.

                        Welcome to the addiction.

Welcome. I had the privilege of putting one back in my stepfathers hands not too long ago. He qualified with one and carried one in the Marines. Over 50 years later and he had an ear to ear smile when it went "ping".
                          Cheers

                              Heavy weight. Optimal weight.

The main factor in reducing recoil is the cycling of the action. Gas-operated semi-autos with significant reciprocating mass (the op rod and bolt) reduce recoil.

Think action-reaction. The reaction to the bullet flying away at several thousand feet per second pushes the gun into your shoulder. Recoil. The op rod and bolt initially move towards you, so they tend to pull the rifle away from you. Recoil reduction.

Yes, the weight and the balance point help. But my Finn M1939 is of similar weight and balance. Russian light ball is in the same ballpark of power as M2 Ball. The recoil of the M39 isn't bad, but nowhere near as attenuated as my M1 Garand.

                              Regards,
