    I want a freakin mas49/56

but they're not CA legal in their most commonly found configuration.

is there any way to make these legal without more or less cutting them up and destroying their original/collector value?

How about a MAS49? Much easier GL to remove, and there's no permanent change to the rifle or the GL parts.
You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.
      Come on...what harm??

Yes. I found a motivated seller willing to remove the GL before shipping. Takes a punch and a hammer to remove the washer. Easily returned to stock configuration out of state.

Seller kept the GL and I shoot it without the FH. Awesome piece worth the added effort.

                They are around...
Since the 49/56 has a removable magazine it is subject to the law.
It has only two offending issues the grenade launcher and the flash hider which is part of the grenade launching system.
From what I understand and was told about that extremely byzantine law those 2 offending functions need to be disabled. In order to do that the flash hider need to be unscrewed and removed as well as the grenade launching adjusting cursor.
The gas port and the aiming system do not appear to be an issue.

As a side note ... the early 49/56 had a muzzle brake which, later on was replaced with the flash hider. I have never seen one of those muzzle brake in the US.
The 49 has also a grenade launcher in the original French configuration as well as in the Syrian configuration, after the issue of the 49/56 the 49 were modified to remove the grenade launcher, those are legal.

I assume that in order to make them legal, the 49 need to have their grenade launching cursor (manchon) removed.
The other alternative is the MAS 44 which does not have a GL.
                Besty regards

Mine looks like the one on top in the first picture minus the cursor and the grenade sight. It does have the flash hider.

BTW, a GL is a no-go regardless of removable magazine. They're considered DD's in CA.

The GL on the 49 comes right off with snap-ring pliers and and screwdriver.
