Help Needed - M1 Carbine Barrel Band Screw Replacement

    Greetings,

I have a Standard Products carbine with a type 3 barrel band and I lost the screw at a previous outing. I ordered and received what I thought is the correct replacement screw, but I am not sure if the screw works or not.

I don't remember how much the original screw stuck out on the other side of the barrel band. It seems the replacement screw is a bit long and I also can't tighten the screw more that two turns before meeting a lot of resistance. I stopped in fear of stripping the barrel band.

    Questions:
    - Did I order the correct screw?
    - If not, what type do I need to track down?
    - Should the screw be very difficult to screw with a screwdriver? Should I worry about stripping the band? Should I just torque it in?
    - Should the screw sick out that much on the other side of the band?

    Thank you!

    Dun

Try slipping the barrel band off the stock, aligning the tabs and installing the screw. When it's tensioned by the stock, it's pretty likely that the tabs aren't aligned which keeps the screw from engaging the threads correctly. Once it's threaded correctly, stop. Now you should be able to spread the band slightly and reinstall it in its correct position. Tightening the screw should be smooth sailing after that.

Yes, the screw will stick out on the other side. That's not a problem.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

The screw is suppose to be long. Once you get it on and tightened, peen the end of the screw so it wont come out and get lost.

Those screws are not supposed to be removed all the way. They were staked in place, as TMB said after they were assembled. My guess is somewhere along the way, someone unscrewed it all the way without grinding off the staked part of the threads on the end of the screw, and messed up the threads in the barrel band. You might chase the threads with a proper size tap if they look messed up, if you can't get the screw in. Might luck out and get it to work. But if not, you might need to repair the threads, or just replace the band with another one not stripped.

Hmmm. No go with the screw after removing the band from the stock and pinching the band together. I'm going to track down what I think is the right size tap to chase/clean the threads - they don't appear to be stripped. Measuring the TPI and width of the screw, and some Google searches, it looks like I need 10-32 tap.

Still don't know how the screw came off. I never totally remove the screw in the past, just loosened it.

            Keep you posted...

A 10-32 tap cleaned up the threads nicely. I'm good to go. Thanks for everyone's input.
