I am going to part ways with the majority of the firearms enthusiasts out there and agree with Pit's above statement on the awfulness of this "sport". Trophy hunting to me is a repugnant past time.

If some "Big Game Hunter" had an equipment failure and got skewered by an angry wounded animal that he was trying to kill, I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it. If I ever go on an African Safari, the only thing I am going to be shooting the animals with is a camera.

Safari's today, are just park reserve game management. It's highly regulated, promotes healthy herds, and provides revenue to maintain the preserves. Not much different than hunting here, just more regulated, expensive, and they do it better.
Nothing is wasted from the animal, you get a trophy mount and some steaks while you're there, and the locals get meat on the table.
Without it, the herds are left unchecked, and the overpopulation breeds disease and famine. There wouldn't be any "camera safaris" either.

You need to go to a slaughter house and watch truck loads of hogs and beef cattle die one after the other as they walk through the chute.
You may find that equally repugnant ?

Trap - email me, I'll send you the vid.
Yup, Grendl - croc not alligator - my bad - email me if you want to know more, sir.

You can justify sport hunting all you want, it's just not for me, I'd rather spend the hunt money on C&Rs, these hunts run between $80K and $130K, BTW.
I also don't like skeet shooting, lol.
I love guns, but I suppose I don't like shooting at people or being shot at much, either - beautiful thing about this hobby is it attracts all types.

I'll defer to this ex-terrorist turned poet:
“I respect kindness in human beings first of all, and kindness to animals. I don't respect the law; I have a total irreverence for anything connected with society except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer.”

There is no need to recycle the old and tired "pro hunting" talking points. I have heard them all. Yes, I find that just as repugnant and that is why I haven't eaten meat in years. I think the most carnivorous meat eater would find it difficult to feast on a T-Bone while watching animals being slaughtered, so I don't really get your point there.

And let's not be coy about why people spend thousands of dollars and travel around the world to hunt big game. It isn't to provide meat for the locals or preserve the balance of nature. It is just to kill stuff.

If you read my original post, I didn't call for banning hunting or outlawing African Safaris. I don't act like a liberal and call for bans on things that offend me. I simply said that I would not feel any pity for a "hunter" who messes with the bull and gets the horns.

I'll follow the same logic in saying that I feel the same way about a bullfighter who gets gored by a bull. No tears there either, but I won't call for a ban on bullfighting either.

And P.S. I mean no offense to Pitfighter or Trap, both of whom contribute much to the C&R threads.

                  None taken.
I worked in a meat packing plant years ago, that about made me a vegetarian. I still won't eat prime rib or any kind of mutton because of it.
Most wild game tastes like liver to me anyhow, and I don't eat animal organs. I'll take Elk, Moose, or Bison, over beef anytime though. The only hunting I do anymore is birds, ...pheasant, chukar, and dove.

That's the guys at accuratereloading.com and I think that video is of them shooting the .577 T-Rex. One of those guys broke his collar bone and dislocated his shoulder.
Here's a .700 Nitro bolt action and bolt action being shot.

The beautiful things is - we live in a country that should you wish to shoot animals to eat with a .600 Nitro, you can, and should you wish not to, we have some great restaurants, too.

So I was driving home from the range and I noticed that the scent of warm steel, burnt gunpowder and lukewarm coffee combined and smelled oddly of... Peanut butter?! Man, the Hoppe's is going to my head.

Hit it perfect again Trap. I have a friend who's wealth was hard worked for. For him the safari is a privilege and experience he looks forward to as HIS reward for his hard work. He calls it " harvesting" the wildlife. When he is lucky, he brings home a trophy or sometimes donates nice specimens to different organizations. Yes the meat is also donated to the locals by a religious leader, ( can't trust their government, sound familiar ). They do have it well organized like a deer hunt here stateside. All of the arrangements, permits, everything falls under the umbrella price. He enjoys the heck out of it.

I figure a guy can do with his money as you please, long as you're not hurting someone or doing something immoral.
